lock-stitch s. a continuous hemostatic suture used in intestinal surgery: the needle is passed through all layers of the bowel and the loop of suture material is made to fall over the point of emergence of the needle, which comes up through the loop, forming a self-locking stitch when the strand is pulled taut.
