| tympanic membrane perforation | An opening in the tympanic membrane usually caused by trauma. There are four general categories: compression injuries (the most common and usually the result of a blow to the ear); instrumentation injuries (the second most common, usually inadvertent, caused often by cotton swabs or bobby-pins); burn-slag injuries (frequently seen in industry, from hot metal from machines or welding); and blast injuries (usually seen during war or as a result of terrorist bombing). In the absence of infection, most traumatic tympanic membrane perforations heal spontaneously. Persistent perforation is usually a manifestation of tubotympanitis, an inflammation of the eustachian tube and tympanic cavity (middle ear). (12 Dec 1998) |

| umbo of tympanic membrane | The projection on the inner surface of the tympanic membrane at the end of the manubrium of the malleus; this corresponds to the most depressed point of the membrane, viewed laterally, that is commonly called the umbo. Synonym: umbo membranae tympani, umbo. (05 Mar 2000) |
| flaccid part of tympanic membrane | Triangular loose part of tympanic membrane between the malleolar folds. Synonym: pars flaccida membranae tympani, flaccid membrane, membrana flaccida, Rivinus' membrane, Shrapnell's membrane. (05 Mar 2000) |

| Vieussens' limbus | A muscular ring surrounding the fossa ovalis in the wall of the right atrium of the heart. Synonym: annulus ovalis, margin of fossa ovalis, Vieussens' annulus, Vieussens' isthmus, Vieussens' limbus, Vieussens' ring. (05 Mar 2000) |
| limbus | 1. An extramundane region where certain classes of souls were supposed to await the judgment. "As far from help as Limbo is from bliss." (Shak) "A Limbo large and broad, since called The Paradise of fools." (Milton) The limbus patrum was considered as a place for the souls of good men who lived before the coming of our Savior. The limbus infantium was said to be a similar place for the souls of unbaptized infants. To these was added, in the popular belief, the limbus fatuorum, or fool's paradise, regarded as a receptacle of all vanity and nonsense. 2. Hence: Any real or imaginary place of restraint or confinement; a prison; as, to put a man in limbo. 3. <anatomy> A border or margin; as, the limbus of the cornea. 4. A West Indian dance contest, in which participants must dance under a pole which is lowered successively until only one participant can successfully pass under, without falling. [MW10 Jamaican E limba to bend, fr. E. Limber (1950)] Often performed at celebrations, such as weddings. (1950-1996) Origin: L. Limbus border, edge in limbo on the border. Cf. Limb border. | limbus acetabuli | The rim of bone around the acetabulum to which is attached the labrum acetabulare. Synonym: limbus acetabuli, margo acetabularis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| limbus alveolaris | The free margin of the alveolar process of the mandible. Synonym: arcus alveolaris mandibulae, limbus alveolaris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| limbus corneae | An annular transitional zone, approximately 1 mm wide, between the cornea and the bulbar conjunctiva and sclera. It is highly vascular and is involved in the metabolism of the cornea. It is ophthalmologically significant in that it appears on the outer surface of the eyeball as a slight furrow, marking the line between the clear cornea and the sclera. (12 Dec 1998) |
| limbus fossae ovalis | A muscular ring surrounding the fossa ovalis in the wall of the right atrium of the heart. Synonym: annulus ovalis, margin of fossa ovalis, Vieussens' annulus, Vieussens' isthmus, Vieussens' limbus, Vieussens' ring. (05 Mar 2000) |
| limbus laminae spiralis osseae | The border of the spiral lamina; the thickened periosteum covering the upper plate of the bony spiral lamina of the cochlea. Synonym: limbus laminae spiralis osseae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| limbus membranae tympani | Margin of the tympanic membrane attaching to the tympanic sulcus. Synonym: limbus membranae tympani. (05 Mar 2000) |
| limbus of bony spiral lamina | The border of the spiral lamina; the thickened periosteum covering the upper plate of the bony spiral lamina of the cochlea. Synonym: limbus laminae spiralis osseae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| limbus of cornea | The margin of the cornea overlapped by the sclera. Synonym: limbus corneae, corneal margin, sclerocorneal junction. (05 Mar 2000) |
