| granular layer of cerebellar cortex | The deepest of the three layers of the cortex; it contains large numbers of granule cells, the dendrites of which synapse with incoming mossy fibres in cerebellar glomeruli. Thin, unmyelinated axons of granule cells ascend perpendicularly into the molecular layer in which they bifurcate into fibres coursing parallel to the long axis of the cerebellar folia. Parallel fibres form numerous synapses with the dendrites of Purkinje cells, basket cells, and stellate cells. Synonym: stratum granulosum cerebelli, granular layer of cerebellar cortex. | granular layers of cerebral cortex | Layers 2 (outer) and 4 (inner) of the cortex cerebri. (05 Mar 2000) |
| peristriate cortex | See: visual cortex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| molecular layer of cerebellar cortex | The outer lamina of the cortex, containing the cell bodies and dendrites of Purkinje cells, the axons of the granule cells, and the cell bodies, dendrites, and axons of basket cells. Synonym: stratum moleculare cerebelli, molecular layer of cerebellar cortex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| molecular layer of cerebral cortex | Layer 1 of the cortex cerebri. Synonym: plexiform layer of cerebral cortex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| piriform cortex | The olfactory cortex, corresponding to the rostral half of the uncus; receiving its major afferents from the olfactory bulb, it is classified as allocortex. See: cerebral cortex. Synonym: olfactory cortex, piriform area. (05 Mar 2000) |
| motor cortex | Area of the frontal lobe concerned with primary motor control. It lies anterior to the central sulcus. (12 Dec 1998) |

| cortex | <anatomy> The outer layer of an organ or other body structure, as distinguished from the internal substance. Origin: L. Corticalis = bark, rind, shell (18 Nov 1997) |
| cortex cerebelli | The thin gray surface layer of the cerebellum, consisting of an outer molecular layer or stratum moleculare, a single layer of Purkinje cells (the ganglionic layer), and an inner granular layer or stratum granulosum. Synonym: cortex cerebelli. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cortex cerebri | The outer portion of the brain, consisting of layersof nerve cells and the pathways that connect them. The cerebralcortex is the part of the brain in which thought processes take place. In Alzheimer's disease, nerve cells in the cerebral cortex die. (22 May 1997) |
| cortex glandulae suprarenalis | The outer part of the adrenal gland, consisting of three zones from without inward: zona glomerulosa, zona fasciculata, and zona reticularis; this part of the adrenal cortex yields steroid hormones such as corticosterone, deoxycorticosterone, and estrone. Synonym: cortex glandulae suprarenalis, adrenal cortex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cortex lentis | The softer, more superficial part of the lens of the eye that encloses the central part or nucleus; its refractive power is less than that of the nucleus. Synonym: cortex lentis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cortex nodi lymphatici | The outer portion of the lymph node underneath its capsule, consisting of fibrous trabeculae separating densely packed masses of lymphocytes arranged in nodules and separated from the trabeculae and capsule by lymph sinuses. Synonym: cortex nodi lymphatici. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cortex of hair shaft | The principal structural component of the hair shaft, composed of closely packed fusiform keratinised cells and invested by the cuticula pili. (05 Mar 2000) |
