| fonticuli cranii | <anatomy> The membranous intervals between the angles of the cranial bones in the infant; they include the midline anterior fontanel and posterior fontanel, and the paired sphenoidal fontanel and mastoid fontanel. Synonym: fonticuli cranii. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fossa cranii anterior | The portion of the internal base of the skull, anterior to the sphenoidal ridges and limbus, in which the frontal lobes of the brain rest. Synonym: fossa cranii anterior, anterior cranial base. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fossa cranii media | A butterfly-shaped portion of the internal base of the skull posterior to the sphenoidal ridges and limbus and anterior to the crests of the petrous part of the temporal bones and dorsum sellae; it lodges the temporal lobes of the brain in the lateral portions, and the hypophysis centrally. Synonym: fossa cranii media. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fossa cranii posterior | The internal base of the skull posterior to the crest of the petrous part of the temporal bones and the dorsum sellae and anterior to the grooves for the transverse sinuses, where the cerebellum, pons, and medulla oblongata rest. Synonym: fossa cranii posterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria auditiva interna | <anatomy, artery> Internal acoustic meatal branch. A branch of the basilar artery that enters the labyrinth through the internal acoustic meatus. Synonym: arteria labyrinthi, ramus meatus acustici interni, arteria auditiva interna, artery of labyrinth, internal auditory artery. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria carotis interna | <anatomy, artery> Arises from the common carotid opposite upper border of thyroid cartilage (C-4 vertebral level) and terminates in the middle cranial fossa by dividing into the anterior and middle cerebral arteries; for descriptive purposes it is divided into four parts: cervical, petrous, cavernous, and cerebral. Synonym: arteria carotis interna. (05 Mar 2000) |

| arteria mammaria interna | <anatomy, artery> Origin, subclavian; branches, pericardiacophrenic, anterior intercostal, sternal, mediastinal, thymic, bronchial, muscular, and perforating branches, and bifurcates into the musculophrenic and superior epigastric. Synonym: arteria thoracica interna, arteria mammaria interna, internal mammary artery. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria pudenda interna | <anatomy, artery> Origin, internal iliac; branches, inferior rectal, perineal, posterior scrotal (or labial), urethral, artery of bulb of penis (or of vestibule), deep artery of penis (or clitoris), dorsal artery of penis (or clitoris). Synonym: arteria pudenda interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria spermatica interna | <anatomy, artery> Origin, aorta; branches, ureteral, cremasteric, epididymal; distribution, testicle and parts designated by names of branches; anastomoses, branches of renal, inferior epigastric, deferential. Synonym: arteria testicularis, arteria spermatica interna, internal spermatic artery. (05 Mar 2000) |

| capsula interna | <anatomy, neurology> A massive layer (8 to 10 mm thick) of white matter separating the caudate nucleus and thalamus (medial) from the more laterally situated lentiform nucleus (globus pallidus and putamen). It consists of 1) fibres ascending from the thalamus to the cerebral cortex that compose, among others, the visual, auditory, and somatic sensory radiations, and 2) fibres descending from the cerebral cortex to the thalamus, subthalamic region, midbrain, hindbrain, and spinal cord. The internal capsule is the major route by which the cerebral cortex is connected with the brainstem and spinal cord. Laterally and superiorly it is continuous with the corona radiata which forms a major part of the cerebral hemisphere's white matter; caudally and medially it continues, much reduced in size, as the crus cerebri which contains, among others, the pyramidal tract. On horizontal section it appears in the form of a V opening out laterally; the V's obtuse angle is called genu (knee). Its anterior and posterior limbs, respectively, the crus anterior and crus posterior. Synonym: capsula interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pachymeningitis interna | Inflammation of the inner surface of the dura mater. Synonym: internal meningitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
