ketosis usually plays an important role in preventing hypoglycemia but in some inherited diseases of fatty acid oxidation deficiency there may be no accumulation of ketones. This is the syndrome of hypoketotic hypoglycemia and reflects the fact that the generation of "new" glucose (neoglucogenesis) is coupled to ketone formation by beta-oxidation of fatty acids.

ketosis Metabolic disturbance in cattle and sheep. The accumulation in the blood plasma, in significant amounts, of ketones (a by-product of fat metabolism) is commonest in winter in dairy cows kept indoors when receiving a full ration of concentrates. (BVD)
