| intervertebral foramen |
An opening, hole or passageway in a bone for blood vessels or nerves. On each side of the vertebral column there is an opening between each vertebrae that enables the spinal nerve roots to pass through. It is this hole or opening that gets constricted when there is a misalignment of a vertebra, disc bulging, and/or inflammed facet ligaments which as a result can irritate the spinal nerve exiting from the spinal cord at that level.

| intervertebral |
disc - This is the soft tissue found between the bones of the spinal column, (ie, the vertebrae). They help cushion the spine from everyday stress (ie, running, walking, jumping, etc.). Through improper posture (ie, bending forward at the waist and twisting), discs can wear out (degenerate). This can lead to the condition known commonly by the laymen, as a "slipped disc", or a disc herniation.
