| blind loop syndrome | <syndrome> Malabsorption, especially of vitamin b12 or folic acid, due to metabolic competition by bacteria proliferating in a segment of small intestine excluded from normal peristaltic movement; it may occur as a postoperative complication of side-to-side anastomosis of intestine, as a result of intestinal diverticula, fistula, etc. (12 Dec 1998) |

| bulboventricular loop | The portion of the early-somite embryonic cardiac tube that evolves into the ventricle and bulbus cordis. Synonym: ventricular loop. (05 Mar 2000) |
| gamma loop | The reflex arc consisting of small anterior horn cells and neuroma, their small fibres projecting to the intrafusal bundle producing its contraction, which initiates the afferent impulses that pass through the posterior root to the anterior horn cells, inducing a stretch reflex. Synonym: gamma motor neurons, gamma motor system, Granit's loop. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vector loop | <physiology> An irregular, usually elliptical, curve representing the average direction and magnitude of the heart's action from moment to moment throughout the cardiac cycle. See: vector, vectorcardiogram. (06 Mar 2000) |
| gastrojejunal loop obstruction syndrome | <syndrome> A complication of gastrojejunostomy, caused by acute or chronic obstruction of the afferent loop due to hernia, intussusception, kinking, volvulus, etc. It is characterised by pain and vomiting of bile-stained fluid and includes acute afferent loop obstruction and bilious vomiting. (12 Dec 1998) |
| ventricular loop | The portion of the early-somite embryonic cardiac tube that evolves into the ventricle and bulbus cordis. Synonym: ventricular loop. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Gerdy's interatrial loop | <cardiology, embryology> A muscular fasciculus in the interatrial septum of the heart, passing backward from the atrioventricular groove. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Vieussens' loop | A nerve cord connecting the middle cervical and stellate sympathetic ganglia, forming a loop around the subclavian artery. Synonym: subclavian loop, Vieussens' ansa, Vieussens' loop. (05 Mar 2000) |
| g loop | <molecular biology, virology> A loop of unpaired strands of DNA from the G region of the genome of the bacteriophage mu. This loop appears after the DNA has been extracted from the bacteriophage, denatured, and then renatured. (14 Oct 1997) |
| peduncular loop | A complex fibre bundle curving around the medial edge of the internal capsule and connecting the anterior part of the temporal lobe (temporal cortex), amygdala, and olfactory cortex with the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus; it enters the thalamus as a component of the inferior thalamic peduncle which also contains a major part of the fibres connecting the mediodorsal nucleus to the orbitofrontal cortex. Synonym: peduncular ansa, peduncular loop, Reil's ansa. (05 Mar 2000) |
| voltage loop | <radiobiology> A wire which encircles the main axis of a tokamak in the vicinity of the vacuum vessel. The voltage induced in this loop during the shot is a measure of the ohmic heating voltage induced by transformer action and applied to the plasma. (09 Oct 1997) |
| cervical loop | A loop in the cervical plexus consisting of fibres from the first three cervical nerves. Fibres from a loop between the C-1 and C-2 spinal nerves accompany the hypoglossal nerve for a short distance, leaving it as the superior root of the ansa cervicalis. Fibres from a loop between the C-2 and C-3 spinal nerves form the inferior root of the ansa cervicalis. Most commonly, the roots merge, forming the ansa cervicalis, which gives rise to branches innervating infrahyoid muscles. Synonym: cervical loop, loop of hypoglossal nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| memory loop | An electronic device for retrieving data that had been stored and/or displayed upon the oscilloscope at an earlier time; used for reviewing electrical events immediately preceding a specific disturbance. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Granit's loop | The reflex arc consisting of small anterior horn cells and neuroma, their small fibres projecting to the intrafusal bundle producing its contraction, which initiates the afferent impulses that pass through the posterior root to the anterior horn cells, inducing a stretch reflex. Synonym: gamma motor neurons, gamma motor system, Granit's loop. (05 Mar 2000) |
| R loop | <molecular biology> A single stranded loop section of DNA formed by the association of a section of ssRNA with the other strand of the DNA in this region whereby one DNA strand is displaced as the loop. Mature mRNA can be used to form loops from exons with the intervening double stranded linear regions being introns. (23 Aug 1998) |
