| icterus index | The value that indicates the relative level of bilirubin in serum or plasma; calculated by comparing (in a colourimeter) the intensity of the colour of the specimen with that of a standard solution (potassium dichromate, 0.05 g, in 500 ml of water, plus 0.2 ml of sulfuric acid); the normal range is 3 to 5, and values greater than 15 are usually associated with clinically apparent jaundice; an index less than 3 is observed in various examples of secondary anaemia, aplastic anaemia, and chlorosis. Sometimes erroneously called icteric index: it is an index of jaundice, not a jaundiced index. (05 Mar 2000) |

| icterus melas | A form in which the skin assumes a dirty dark brown colour. (05 Mar 2000) |
| icterus praecox | A relatively innocent but rapidly developing type of jaundice with mild anaemia in the newborn, most frequently caused by ABO incompatibility between mother and foetus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| infectious icterus | A severe form of leptospirosis caused by leptospira interrogans serogroup icterohaemorrhagica and transmitted to man by the rat. (12 Dec 1998) |
| acne neonatorum | A condition in newborn infants, characterised by papules and comedones on forehead and cheeks. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anaemia neonatorum | <haematology> A condition which develops in the foetus due to an incompatibility between the mother's blood type (RH factor) and the baby's. Maternal antibodies, which enter the foetal circulation during delivery attack the baby's red blood cells leading to haemolysis (rupture of the cells). Symptoms include an infant with an enlarged liver and spleen, swelling, jaundice and anaemia. (27 Sep 1997) |
| anoxia neonatorum | Any anoxia observed in newborn infants. (05 Mar 2000) |
| asphyxia neonatorum | Respiratory failure in the newborn. (12 Dec 1998) |
| blennorrhoea neonatorum | Acute conjunctival inflammation in the newborn, usually caused by maternal gonococcal infection. The causative agent is neisseria gonorrhoeae. The baby's eyes are contaminated during passage through the birth canal. (12 Dec 1998) |
| mastitis neonatorum | Mastitis in the secreting breast tissue of the newborn, usually staphylococcal. (05 Mar 2000) |
| melena neonatorum | <paediatrics> Melena of the newborn or melana occurring in young infants. (05 Mar 2000) |
| myotonia neonatorum | Hypocalcaemic tetany occurring in neonates or young infants, due to transient functional hypoparathyroidism in consumption of cow's milk (high phosphorus content). Synonym: myotonia neonatorum, tetania neonatorum, tetanism. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sclerema neonatorum | A severe, sometimes fatal, disorder of adipose tissue occurring chiefly in preterm or debilitated infants suffering from an underlying illness and manifested by a diffuse, nonpitting induration of the affected tissue. The skin becomes cold, yellowish, mottled, and inflexible. (12 Dec 1998) |
| ichthyosis congenita neonatorum | Generalised ichthyosis with parchment-like skin seen in premature babies. (05 Mar 2000) |
| impetigo neonatorum | Dermatitis exfoliativa neonatorum, a generalised pyoderma accompanied by exfoliative dermatitis, with constitutional symptoms, affecting young infants, which may result from atopic dermatitis, Leiner's disease or staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. Synonym: impetigo neonatorum. (05 Mar 2000) |
