| sicca syndrome | <syndrome> An immunologic disorder characterised by progressive destruction of the exocrine glands (sweat glands, lacrimal glands, salivary glands). Symptoms include dry eyes, dry mouth, persistent cough (dry airways) and lack of saliva. Approximately 30% also have rheumatoid arthritis. Kidney involvement (kidney dysfunction) is seen in 40% of patients. Sjogren's syndrome affects predominately females in their thirties to forties. The lungs, peripheral nerves, blood vessels (vasculitis) and thyroid may also be affected. (27 Sep 1997) |

| hypophysis | A small oval shaped endocrine gland situated at the base of the brain in the fossa (depression) of the sphenoid bone. The overall role is to regulate growth and metabolism. The gland is divided into the posterior and anterior pituitary, each responsible for the production of its own unique hormones. (27 Sep 1997) |
| hypophysis cerebri | pituitary gland |
| Neisseria sicca | A species found in the mucous membranes of the human respiratory tract. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nervous lobe of hypophysis | The bulbous part of the neurohypophysis attached to the hypothalamus by the infundibulum. It is composed of pituicytes, blood vessels, and terminals of nerve fibres from the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei. Synonym: lobus nervosus, nervous lobe. (05 Mar 2000) |
| neural part of hypophysis | It is composed of the infundibulum and the nervous lobe of hypophysis. See: hypophysis. Synonym: lobus posterior hypophyseos, neural part of hypophysis, pars nervosa hypophyseos, posterior lobe of hypophysis. Origin: neuro-+ hypophysis (05 Mar 2000) |
| delta cell of anterior lobe of hypophysis | A variety of cell having basophilic granules. (05 Mar 2000) |
| synovitis sicca | Synovitis with little serous or purulent effusion. Synonym: synovitis sicca. (05 Mar 2000) |
| distal part of anterior lobe of hypophysis | The larger part of the adenohypophysis composed of cords of epithelial cells individually specialised to secrete various tropic hormones that exert their effect on several target organs in the body. The secretory activity of these cells is under the control of either releasing or inhibiting factors elaborated by hypothalamic neurons and transported to the adenohypophysis by the hypothalamo-hypophysial portal system. Synonym: pars distalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| onychia sicca | A condition characterised by brittle nails. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tentorium of hypophysis | A fold of dura mater extending transversely across the sella turcica and roofing over the hypophyseal fossa; it is perforated in its centre for the passage of the infundibulum. Synonym: diaphragma sellae, diaphragm sellae, tentorium of hypophysis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| keratitis sicca | Drying and inflammation of the conjunctiva as a result of insufficient lacrimal secretion. When found in association with xerostomia and polyarthritis, it is called sjogren's syndrome. (12 Dec 1998) |
| keratoconjunctivitis sicca | Drying and inflammation of the conjunctiva as a result of insufficient lacrimal secretion. When found in association with xerostomia and polyarthritis, it is called sjogren's syndrome. (12 Dec 1998) |
