hydrometer
An instrument for measuring the specific gravity (abbreviated as sg), relative to sugar content, of a liquid. The importance of sg rests in it's indication of proofing potential. In other words, sg indicates how much dissolved sugar is present for conversion to alcohol by yast, what tat proof wille, and how much sugar to add to raise the finished proof to a specific level. A hydrometer which indicates the proof of the present alcoholic content is called a "proofing hydrometer."

hydrometer
An instrument that uses buoyancy to measure the density of a liquid; it consists of a weighted tube that floats vertically and determines the specific gravity of the liquid by a comparison of the scale on the tube with the level it floats in the liquid

hydrometer
A long, thin glass tube that is weighted at one end and used to measure the specific gravity of liquids such as wort and beer. Use of a hydrometer throughout the brewing process allows the brewer to judge if everything is progressing normally.
