Typically a grouping of parallel metal surfaces that maintain separation between two fluids while transferring heat from the hot fluid to the cooler fluid. In combustion systems, thermal energy is transferred from the hot exhaust gases to a heat transfer fluid that can be water, air, thermal oil or an antifreeze solution.
