hospital bed capacity The number of beds which a hospital has been designed and constructed to contain. It may also refer to the number of beds set up and staffed for use.
(12 Dec 1998)
diffusing capacity The amount of oxygen taken up by pulmonary capillary blood per minute per unit average oxygen pressure gradient between alveolar gas and pulmonary capillary blood; units are: ml/min/mm Hg; also applied to other gases such as carbon monoxide.
(05 Mar 2000)
inspiratory capacity The maximum volume of air that can be inspired after reaching the end of a normal, quiet expiration. It is the sum of the tidal volume and the inspiratory reserve volume. Common abbreviation is ic.
(12 Dec 1998)
iron-binding capacity The capacity of iron-binding protein in serum (transferrin) to bind serum iron.
(05 Mar 2000)
oxygen capacity The maximum quantity of oxygen that will combine chemically with the haemoglobin in a unit volume of blood; normally it amounts to 1.34 ml of O2 per gm of Hb or 20 ml of O2 per 100 ml of blood.
(05 Mar 2000)
thermal capacity <chemistry> The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of an object by one degree Celsius (or Kelvin), it is represented by the symbol C and is given in units of J/K.
(09 Jan 1998)
total iron binding capacity <biochemistry, haematology> A test that measures indirectly the transferrin level in the bloodstream.
Transferrin is a protein that carries iron in the body. Normal values are 240 to 450 mcg/dl. This test is used to evaluate anaemia. Greater than normal total iron binding capacity can be seen in: iron deficiency anaemia, late pregnancy and polycythaemia vera.
Lower than normal total iron binding capacity can be seen in cirrhosis, sickle cell anaemia, hypoproteinaemia, pernicious anaemia and haemolytic anaemia. The use of birth control pills can lead to increased total iron binding capacity measurements.
Acronym: TIBC
(12 Jan 1998)
total lung capacity The volume of air contained in the lungs at the end of a maximal inspiration. It is the equivalent to each of the following sums: vital capacity plus residual volume; inspiratory capacity plus functional residual capacity; tidal volume plus inspiratory reserve volume plus functional residual capacity; tidal volume plus inspiratory reserve volume plus expiratory reserve volume plus residual volume.
(12 Dec 1998)
forced vital capacity Vital capacity measured with the subject exhaling as rapidly as possible; data relating volume, expiratory flow, and time form the basis for other pulmonary function tests, e.g., flow-volume curve, forced expiratory volume, forced expiratory time, forced expiratory flow.
(05 Mar 2000)
functional residual capacity The volume of air remaining in the lungs at the end of a normal, quiet expiration. It is the sum of the residual volume and the expiratory reserve volume. Common abbreviation is frc.
(12 Dec 1998)
atomic heat The amount of heat required to raise an atom from 0
radiant heat Heat given off from any body in the form of waves, similar to light waves but of greater wavelength.
(05 Mar 2000)
molecular heat The product of the specific heat of a body multiplied by its molecular weight.
(05 Mar 2000)
combined heat and power An older term for what is now generally called cogeneration. The term is currently used in Europe and other foreign countries.
(05 Dec 1998)
conductive heat Heat transmitted by direct contact, as by an electric pad or hot water bottle.

heat capacity the amount of heat it takes to raise the temperature of one gram of a material one degree Celsius.
Ãâó: www.pslc.ws/macrog/kidsmac/glossary.htm
heat capacity It takes a lot of energy (4.184 Jg -1 C -1 ; to convert this to a less desired unit, 1 cal = 4.184 J) to raise the temperature of water (because it requires a lot of energy to break/make hydrogen bonds). Thus, water is slow to heat up and cool down, or stated another way, water resists temperature changes. This is why you can swim in the Sag in late fall but not the spring. ...

heat capacity The quantity of heat that a given volume of a material can hold for each unit increase in temperature, usually given in terms of Btu's per degree Fahrenheit per cubic foot.
Ãâó: www.dulley.com/gloss/gh.htm
heat capacity The amount of energy a mass can store for each degree of temperature difference with its surroundings. Defines the quantity of energy required to increase the average temperature of a mass. Common units are Btu's/lb. or Joules/Kg.
