a type of abnormal large leukocyte, probably in the B lymphocyte lineage, found in the blood in hairy cell leukemia; it has numerous irregular cytoplasmic villi that give it a flagellated or hairy appearance, a round or oval nucleus, gray-blue cytoplasm, moderately clumped nuclear chromatin, and small to imperceptible nucleoli. Called also tricholeukocyte.

a white filiform to flat patch (see oral l.) occurring on the tongue or, rarely, on the buccal mucosa, caused by infection with Epstein-Barr virus and associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection; it is a predictor of the subsequent development of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Called also oral hairy leukoplakia.
