| pituitary growth hormone | <protein> Hormone (191 amino acids) released by anterior pituitary that stimulates release of somatomedin, thereby causing growth. (18 Nov 1997) |

| placental growth hormone | human placental lactogen |
| human growth hormone | <endocrinology> A protein produced in the pituitary gland that stimulates the liver to produce somatomedins, which stimulate growth of bone and muscle. (09 Oct 1997) |
| mullerian inhibiting factor | A 535 amino acid glycoprotein secreted by the Sertoli cells of the testis. It is related to inhibin. Synonym: mullerian inhibiting factor. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mullerian inhibiting substance | A 535 amino acid glycoprotein secreted by the Sertoli cells of the testis. It is related to inhibin. Synonym: mullerian inhibiting factor. (05 Mar 2000) |
| prolactin-inhibiting factor | A substance of hypothalamic origin capable of inhibiting the synthesis and release of prolactin. Synonym: prolactin-inhibiting factor, prolactin-inhibiting hormone. Origin: prolactin + G. Stasis, standing still, + -in (05 Mar 2000) |
| somatotropin release-inhibiting factor | <protein> Gastrointestinal and hypothalmic peptide hormone (two forms: 14 and 28 residues), found in gastric mucosa, pancreatic islets, nerves of the gastrointestinal tract, in posterior pituitary and in the central nervous system. Inhibits gastric secretion and motility: in hypothalamus/pituitary inhibits somatotropin release. (18 Nov 1997) |
| inhibiting antibody | An "incomplete" form of antibody that may coat antigen, but which according to the "lattice theory" does not have a second receptor for attachment to another molecule of antigen; in the case of Rh+ erythrocytes, such an anti-Rh antibody may coat the cells but not cause them to agglutinate in saline; however, agglutination does occur when such coated cells are suspended in serum or other protein media, such as albumin, therefore called serum agglutinin. Synonym: incomplete antibody, inhibiting antibody. (05 Mar 2000) |
| receptors, pituitary hormone-regulating hormone | Cell surface receptors that bind the hypothalamic hormones regulating pituitary cell differentiation, proliferation, and hormone synthesis and release, including the pituitary-releasing and release-inhibiting hormones. The pituitary hormone-regulating hormones are also released by cells other than hypothalamic neurons, and their receptors also occur on non-pituitary cells, especially brain neurons, where their role is less well understood. Receptors for dopamine, which is a prolactin release-inhibiting hormone as well as a common neurotransmitter, are not included here. (12 Dec 1998) |

| follicle-stimulating hormone-releasing hormone | A decapeptide of hypothalamic origin capable of accelerating pituitary secretion of follitropin. Synonym: follicle-stimulating hormone-releasing factor, follicle-stimulating hormone-releasing hormone. Origin: follicle-stimulating hormone + L. Libero, to free, + -in (05 Mar 2000) |
| luteinizing hormone/follicle-stimulating hormone-releasing factor | gonadotrophin-releasing hormone |
| luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone | A hormone that controls sex hormones in men and women. Also called lhrh. (12 Dec 1998) |
| accretionary growth | Growth by an increase of intercellular material. (05 Mar 2000) |
| appositional growth | Growth accomplished by the addition of new layers on those previously formed; e.g., the addition of lamellae in the formation of bone; it is the characteristic method of growth when rigid materials are involved. (05 Mar 2000) |
