glycerol <biochemistry> A metabolic intermediate, but primarily of interest as the central structural component of the major classes of biological lipids, triglycerides and phosphatidyl phospholipids. Also used as a cryoprotectant.
(18 Nov 1997)
glycerol dehydratase <enzyme> Requires a cobamide coenzyme
Registry number: EC 4.2.1.30

glycerol kinase <enzyme> An enzyme that catalyses the formation of glycerol 3-phosphate from ATP and glycerol. Dihydroxyacetone and l-glyceraldehyde can also act as acceptors; utp and, in the case of the yeast enzyme, itp and GTP can act as donors. It provides a way for glycerol derived from fats or glycerides to enter the glycolytic pathway.
Chemical name: ATP:glycerol 3-phosphotransferase
Registry number: EC 2.7.1.30
(12 Dec 1998)
glycerol oxidase <enzyme> Oxidises glycerol in the presence of oxygen to glyceraldehyde and hydrogen peroxide without the requirement of any exogenous cofactors; protoheme ix and copper are in prosthetic group
Registry number: EC 1.1.3.-
(26 Jun 1999)
sn-glycerol-3-phosphorylcholine synthetase <enzyme> Found in rat lung and muscle
Registry number: EC 2.6.99.-
Synonym: gpc synthetase, phosphatidylcholine-glycerol-3-phosphate cholinetransferase
(26 Jun 1999)
iodinated glycerol A form of organically bound iodine which liberates iodine systemically. Has been used as a medicinal source of iodine and as an expectorant in place of inorganic iodides such as potassium iodide.
Synonym: iodopropylidene glycerol, organidin.
(05 Mar 2000)
iodopropylidene glycerol A form of organically bound iodine which liberates iodine systemically. Has been used as a medicinal source of iodine and as an expectorant in place of inorganic iodides such as potassium iodide.
Synonym: iodopropylidene glycerol, organidin.
