second temporal convolution A longitudinal gyrus on the lateral surface of the temporal lobe, between the superior and inferior temporal sulci.
Synonym: gyrus temporalis medius, middle temporal convolution, second temporal convolution.
(05 Mar 2000)
superior frontal convolution A broad convolution running in an anteroposterior direction on the medial edge of the convex surface and of each frontal lobe.
Synonym: gyrus frontalis superior, marginal gyrus, superior frontal convolution.
(05 Mar 2000)
superior temporal convolution A longitudinal gyrus on the lateral surface of the temporal lobe between the lateral (sylvian) fissure and the superior temporal sulcus.
Synonym: gyrus temporalis superior, first temporal convolution, superior temporal convolution.
(05 Mar 2000)
supramarginal convolution A folded convolution capping the posterior extremity of the lateral (sylvian) sulcus; together with the angular gyrus, it forms the inferior half of the parietal lobe.
Synonym: gyrus supramarginalis, supramarginal convolution.
(05 Mar 2000)
inferior frontal convolution A broad convolution on the convexity of the frontal lobe of the cerebrum between the inferior frontal sulcus and the sylvian fissure; divided by branches of the sylvian fissure into three parts: pars (opercularis) basilaris, triangular part, and orbital part; the first two constitute a portion of the frontal operculum.
Synonym: gyrus frontalis inferior, inferior frontal convolution.
(05 Mar 2000)
inferior temporal convolution A sagittal convolution on the inferolateral border of the temporal lobe of the cerebrum, separated from the middle temporal gyrus by the inferior temporal sulcus. On the inferior surface of the temporal lobe it is separated from the medial occipitotemporal gyrus by the occipitotemporal sulcus. It includes the lateral occipitotemporal gyrus.
Synonym: gyrus temporalis inferior, inferior temporal convolution, third temporal convolution.
(05 Mar 2000)
third temporal convolution A sagittal convolution on the inferolateral border of the temporal lobe of the cerebrum, separated from the middle temporal gyrus by the inferior temporal sulcus.
(05 Mar 2000)
transitional convolution A small convolution connecting two lobes or two main gyri in the depth of a sulcus.
Synonym: annectent gyrus, transitional convolution.
(05 Mar 2000)
Zuckerkandl's convolution A slender vertical whitish band immediately anterior to the lamina terminalis and anterior commissure; contrary to its name, it is not a cortical convolution but is the ventral continuation of the transparent septum.
Synonym: area subcallosa, gyrus paraterminalis, gyrus subcallosus, pedunculus corporis callosi, corpus paraterminale, paraterminal body, paraterminal gyrus, peduncle of corpus callosum, precommissural septal area, subcallosal area, Zuckerkandl's convolution.
(05 Mar 2000)
first temporal convolution A longitudinal gyrus on the lateral surface of the temporal lobe between the lateral (sylvian) fissure and the superior temporal sulcus.
Synonym: gyrus temporalis superior, first temporal convolution, superior temporal convolution.
(05 Mar 2000)
abdominal external oblique muscle <anatomy, muscle> Origin, fifth to twelfth ribs; insertion, anterior half of lateral lip of iliac crest, inguinal ligament, and anterior layer of the rectus sheath; action, diminishes capacity of abdomen, draws thorax downward; nerve supply, thoracoabdominal nerves.
Synonym: musculus obliquus externus abdominis, abdominal external oblique muscle.
(05 Mar 2000)
ambiguous external genitalia External genitalia not clearly of either sex; most commonly designates external genitalia that are incompletely masculinised.
(05 Mar 2000)
anterior scrotal branch of external pudendal artery <anatomy, artery> Distribution, skin of anterior scrotum; anastomoses, posterior scrotal branches from internal pudendal artery.
Synonym: rami scrotales anteriores arteriae pudendae externae.
(05 Mar 2000)
aponeurosis of external abdominal oblique muscle <anatomy> Broad, flat tendinous portion of the external abdominal oblique muscle. The fleshy fibres of the muscle end in the aponeurosis along a line descending vertically from the costochondral joint of the ninth rib then turning laterally just below the level of the umbilicus toward the anterior superior iliac spine. The fibres of the aponeurosis run medially and inferiorly, contributing to the anterior wall of the sheath of the rectus abdominis muscle and decussating with those of the contralateral aponeurosis at the median linea alba. Inferomedially, the aponeurosis is attached to the upper border of the pubic symphysis, the pubic crest and pubic tubercle. Between the anterior superior iliac spine and the pubic tubercle, it is thickened and turned under, forming the inguinal ligaments. The portion of the aponeurosis attached to the pubic bone forms the superficial inguinal ring by splitting into medial and lateral crura.
See: external spermatic fascia, inguinal ligament, lacunar ligament, pectineal ligament, reflected inguinal ligament, superficial inguinal ring, rectus sheath.
(05 Mar 2000)
bony part of external acoustic meatus The medial two-thirds of the external acoustic meatus which is formed as the tympanic plate of the temporal bone develops; it extends approximately 16 mm. From its junction with the cartilaginous part to the tympanic membrane.
