The procedure during which deoxygenated, venous blood is carried back to the lungs, where carbon dioxide is exhaled. Expiration depends on the elastic recoil of the lungs after inspiratory stretching, elastic recoil of the costal cartilages, and the relaxation of the inspiratory muslces.
