mouse encephalomyelitis virus A virus of the genus Enterovirus, family Picornaviridae, normally associated with inapparent infections and found in the intestinal tracts of infected mice, occasionally causing mouse encephalomyelitis in experimentally inoculated susceptible mice.
Synonym: mouse poliomyelitis virus.
(05 Mar 2000)
porcine haemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus A coronavirus causing vomiting, wasting, and encephalomyelitis in young pigs.
(05 Mar 2000)
postvaccinal encephalomyelitis A severe type of encephalomyelitis that can follow the rabies vaccination.
Synonym: postvaccinal encephalitis.
(05 Mar 2000)
herpes B encephalomyelitis A frequently lethal disease of humans caused by infection with a normally latent monkey herpesvirus.
(05 Mar 2000)
sporadic bovine encephalomyelitis A disease of cattle caused by the bacterium Chlamydia psittaci and characterised by fever, depression, excessive salivation, diarrhoea, anorexia, and incoordination.
(05 Mar 2000)
infectious porcine encephalomyelitis Porcine polioencephalomyelitis; a disease of swine caused by porcine enterovirus 1 and resembling human poliomyelitis; it is characterised by stiffness, convulsions, paralysis, and prostration, and is widespread in Europe, with most serious losses occurring in Poland and the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Synonym: infectious porcine encephalomyelitis, porcine polioencephalomyelitis.
Origin: Teschen, Silisia
(05 Mar 2000)
infectious porcine encephalomyelitis virus A picornavirus causing Teschen disease of pigs; the virus is normally a harmless inhabitant of the intestinal tract, but virulent strains cause epizootics of the disease.
Synonym: infectious porcine encephalomyelitis virus.
(05 Mar 2000)
Theiler's mouse encephalomyelitis virus A virus in the family Picornaviridae.
Synonym: Theiler's original virus, Theiler's virus.
(05 Mar 2000)
theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus A species of cardiovirus which causes poliomyelitis in rats. It should not be confused with the strain of encepalomyocarditis virus called encephalomyelitis virus, murine, which is also a cardiovirus.
(12 Dec 1998)
eastern equine encephalomyelitis A form of mosquito-borne equine encephalomyelitis seen in the eastern U.S. And caused by the eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus, a species of Alphavirus, which belongs to the family Togaviridae; initial fever and viraemia are followed by signs of central nervous system involvement (excitement, then somnolence, paralysis, and death); the incidence of clinical infection in man is low but case fatality may be high.
(05 Mar 2000)
eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus A virus of the genus Alphavirus (formerly group A arbovirus), in the family Togaviridae, occurring in the eastern United States; it is normally present in certain wild birds as an inapparent infection, but is capable of causing eastern equine encephalomyelitis in horses and humans following transfer by the bites of culicine mosquitoes.
Synonym: EEE virus.
(05 Mar 2000)
enzootic encephalomyelitis An encephalomyelitis of horses, sheep and cattle caused by an RNA virus.
(12 Dec 1998)
enzootic encephalomyelitis virus An unclassified, single-stranded RNA virus, possibly related to the family rhabdoviridae, causing a rare and usually fatal encephalitic disease in horses and other domestic animals and possibly deer. Its name derives from the city in saxony where the condition was first described in 1894, but the disease occurs in europe, n. Africa, and the near east.
(12 Dec 1998)
epidemic myalgic encephalomyelitis An epidemic disease characterised by stiffness of the neck and back, headache, diarrhoea, fever, and localised muscular weakness; restricted almost exclusively to adults, affecting women more than men; probably viral in origin.
Synonym: Akureyri disease, benign myalgic encephalomyelitis, epidemic myalgic encephalomyelitis, Iceland disease.
(05 Mar 2000)
equine encephalomyelitis <veterinary> An acute, often fatal, virus disease of horses and mules transmitted by mosquitoes and characterised by central nervous system disturbances.
It is typically caused by one of two arthropod-borne viruses, and their resulting diseases are designated western equine or eastern equine encephalomyelitis; these viruses belong to the family Togaviridae and can also cause neurologic disease in humans.
Synonym: equine encephalitis.

  • Encephalomyelitis, Enzootic Porcine - »õâ A picornavirus infection producing symptoms similar to poliomyelitis in pigs.
Synonyms : Porcine Poliomyelitis, Disease, Talfan, Disease, Teschen, Enzootic Porcine Encephalomyelitis, Porcine Encephalomyelitis, Enzootic
  • Encephalomyelitis, Equine - »õâ A group of ALPHAVIRUS INFECTIONS which affect horses and man, transmitted via the bites of mosquitoes. Disorders in this category are endemic to regions of South America and North America. In humans, clinical manifestations vary with the type of infection, and range from a mild influenza-like syndrome to a fulminant encephalitis. (From Joynt, Clinical Neurology, 1996, Ch26, pp8-10)
Synonyms : Equine Encephalitis, Equine Encephalomyelitis Viral Infections, Infections, Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus, Equine Encephalomyelitis
  • Encephalomyelitis, Venezuelan Equine - »õâ A form of arboviral encephalitis endemic to Central America and the northern latitudes of South America. The causative organism (ENCEPHALITIS VIRUS, VENEZUELAN EQUINE) is transmitted to humans and horses via the bite of several mosquito species. Human viral infection may be asymptomatic or remain restricted to a mild influenza-like illness. Encephalitis, usually not severe, occurs in a small percentage of cases and may rarely feature SEIZURES and COMA. (From Joynt, Clinical Neurology, 1996, Ch26, pp9-10)
