emancipation President Lincoln issued, Jan. 1, 1863, a proclamation declaring all slaves within the lines of secession free. In theory slave-holders in loyal States were protected from its operation, but practically that proclamation was the death knell of slavery throughout the country. It also took from the institution as it existed in Cuba and Brazil a moral support which was its real bulwark.

emanation To "flow out from." In Saiva Siddhanta philosophy, God Siva creates and is His creation. Siva's creation of the world from Himself is described in scripture as being similar to "sparks issuing forth from fire" or "a web from a spider." emanation In connection with Neoplatonism (ca. AD 250-500), all of reality is an emanation (ie, a continual flowing out) from the One (ie, God). There is a process of denigration in this continual flowing out . First, nous (mind) , then soul, then matter , matter being the furthest emanation from the One. Since man is a material emanation, his purpose is to reject the material world and instead embrace the spiritual. In this way, he "turns back" to the One and contemplates his divine origin.
