| 설명 | 고막은 소리를 전달하는 바깥귓 길의 끝에 위치하는 원형에 가까운 타원형의 얇은 막으로서 크기는 가로 9~10mm, 세로 8~9mm, 두께 약 0.1mm정도이다. 몸의 중심축에 비하여 앞쪽으로 기울어져 있으며, 고막의 면은 평평하지 않고 안쪽으로 약간 오목하게 들어가 있고 그중에 가장 많이 들어간 부위를 배꼽이라고 한다. 외관상으로 진주빛같은 회백색 또는 담홍색의 빛나는 반투명 막으로 100mmHg 압력에 견딜 수 있다. 이 고막은 귀속에 있는 작은 뼈인 3개의 귓속뼈 중에서 가장 바깥쪽의 것인 망치뼈와 부착되어 있기 때문에 고막의 표면은 약간 울퉁불퉁하게 되어 있다. 망치뼈의 짧은 돌기가 고막의 위로 돌출하며, 이 돌기에서 앞뒤로 달리는 전-후 망치뼈주름이 있고, 이에 의해 고막이 위아래로 이분된다. 위쪽은 이완부이고 아래쪽은 긴장부이다. 그리고 바깥귀길에서 고막을 관찰하기 위해서 빛을 비출 경우에 그 빛이 반사되는 부분이 생기는데 그것을 빛원뿔이라고 한다. 바깥귓길에서 들어온 소리의 에너지는 대부분 고막으로 전달되고, 여기서 다시 가운데귀로 전달된다.  |

| 설명 | 귀는 오감의 하나인 청각을 받아들여 소리를 듣고, 회화를 이해하는 중요한 생활정보의 입력 장소이다. 신체의 평형감각을 담당하는 중요한 전정, 반고리관이 있어서 인간이 일상생활을 영위하는 데에 매우 중요한 기능을 하는 곳이다. 어떤 이유로 이들 기능이 떨어지면 난청이나 귀울음, 또는 현기증, 비틀거림 등의 평형장애가 나타나고, 심각한 정보장애가 일어나므로 충분한 주의가 필요하다. 귀는 크게 바깥귀, 가운데귀, 속귀의 3부분으로 나누는데 바깥귀라고 하는 것은 소리를 고막까지 전달하는 외이도부분을 말한다. 그리고 중이란 고막에서 내이 사이의 공간으로 여기에는 고막의 진동을 소리를 느끼는 달팽이(cochlea)까지 전달해 주는 작은 뼈인 3개의 귓속뼈(ossicle)이 있는 곳이다. 속귀란 소리를 직접 느끼는 기관인 달팽이, 평행감각을 담당하는 반고리관, 구형낭(saccule), 타원낭(utricle)이 있는 곳을 말한다. |

| cauliflower-ear deformity | Destruction of the underlying cartilage framework of the outer ear (pinnae), usually caused by either infection or trauma, resulting in a thickening of the ear. Classically, blood collects (haematoma) between the ear cartilage and the skin. There is a marked thickening of the entire ear which may be so extensive that the shape of the ear becomes unrecognizable. The ear is said to look like a piece of cauliflower.
