dual diagnosis The presence of mental illness in a patient with a history of concurrent substance abuse.
Ãâó:
dual diagnosis Specifically in the area of intellectual disability. I say this, as there are other areas in the Health sector using this term as well. When a person with an intellectual disability is diagnosed with having a long term mental illness by a psychiatrist then they are classified as having a dual diagnosis of an intellectual disability and the mental illness. This does not apply when the mental disorder is Autism, as the primary diagnosis will always be an intellectual disability.
