This is a chromosomal disorder that occurs when, instead of the normal complement of two copies of chromosome 21, there is a whole (or sometimes part of an) additional chromosome 21. A chromosome is a rod-like structure present in the nucleus of all body cells, with the exception of the red blood cells, which stores genetic information. A chromosome abnormality in which there are 3 copies of chromosome 21 instead of 2. It is also called Trisomy 21. The condition is characterised by distinctive facial features and varying degrees of learning difficulties and is often associated with lung and heart problems.
