| deep femoral vein | <anatomy, vein> The vein that accompanies the deep femoral artery, receiving perforating veins from the lateral and posterior aspects of the thigh. It joins the femoral vein in the femoral triangle, usually in common with the medial and lateral circumflex femoral veins. Synonym: vena profunda femoris. (05 Mar 2000) |

| deep lingual vein | <anatomy, vein> The principle vein of the tongue that accompanies the deep lingual artery and joins the lingual vein. It drains the body and apex of the tongue, running posteriorly near the median plane; they are often visible through the mucosa on the underside of the tongue, to each side of the frenulum. Synonym: vena profunda linguae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| deep middle cerebral vein | <anatomy, vein> The vein that accompanies the middle cerebral artery in the depths of the lateral sulcus and empties into the basal vein of Rosenthal. Synonym: vena cerebri media profunda. (05 Mar 2000) |
| deep vein thrombosis | Blood clotting in the veins of the inner thigh or leg. In air travel, DVT is the economy-class syndrome. Even in young, health travelers the long stretches immobilised in cramped seats in cabins with very low humidity set the stage for the formation of a thrombus (blood clot) in the lower leg. Blood clots can break off (as an embolism) and makes its way to the luhg where it has the potential of causing respiratory distress and respiratory failure. (12 Dec 1998) |
| dorsal callosal vein | It originates on the superior surface of the corpus callosum and runs posteriorly to terminate in the great cerebral vein. Synonym: dorsal callosal vein, dorsal vein of corpus callosum, posterior marginal vein, posterior pericallosal vein. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dorsal lingual vein | <anatomy, vein> Multiple tributaries of the lingual vein draining the dorsum of the tongue, becoming increasingly larger toward the root of the tongue. Synonym: venae dorsales linguae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dorsal scapular vein | <anatomy, vein> The vena comitans of the descending scapular artery; it is a tributary to the subclavian or the external jugular vein. Synonym: vena scapularis dorsalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dorsal vein of corpus callosum | It originates on the superior surface of the corpus callosum and runs posteriorly to terminate in the great cerebral vein. Synonym: dorsal callosal vein, dorsal vein of corpus callosum, posterior marginal vein, posterior pericallosal vein. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria bulbi penis | A branch of the internal pudendal artery which supplies the bulb of the penis including the bulbar urethra. Synonym: arteria bulbi penis, arteria bulbi urethrae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria dorsalis penis | The dorsal terminal branch of the internal pudendal artery in the male. Synonym: arteria dorsalis penis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteriae helicinae penis | The coiled terminal branches of the deep and dorsal arteries of the penis. Parasympathetic stimulation causes them to uncoil, allowing blood at arterial pressure to fill the cavernous tissue causing erection. Synonym: arteriae helicinae penis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria profunda penis | Origin, terminal branch (with dorsal artery of penis) of the internal pudendal artery; distribution, corpus cavernosum of the penis via capillary beds and via helcine arteries and arteriovenous anastomoses to produce erection. Synonym: arteria profunda penis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteries of penis | See: dorsal artery of penis, deep artery of penis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| artery of bulb of penis | A branch of the internal pudendal artery which supplies the bulb of the penis including the bulbar urethra. Synonym: arteria bulbi penis, arteria bulbi urethrae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bifid penis | A rare congenital anomaly in which the penis is partly or completely duplicated; may be symmetrical, or placed one above the other; often there are associated urogenital or other anomalies; occurs when two genital tubercles develop. May also be associated with exstrophy of the urinary bladder. Synonym: bifid penis. Origin: G. Di-, two, + phallos, penis (05 Mar 2000) |
