| corneal neovascularization | New blood vessels originating from the corneal veins and extending from the limbus into the adjacent corneal stroma. These vessels may lie in the superficial and/or deep corneal stroma. Neovascularization is a sequel to numerous inflammatory diseases of the ocular anterior segment, including trachoma, viral interstitial keratitis, microbial keratoconjunctivitis, and the immune response elicited by corneal transplantation. | corneal opacity | Clouding that can occur in the cornea secondary to inflammation, infection or irritant exposure (foreign body or chemical). Physicians can visualize the corneal for the presence of opacities using the slit lamp (eye scope). (27 Sep 1997) |

| corneal topography | Measurement of the anterior surface of the cornea, its curvature and shape. It is used often to diagnose keratoconus and other corneal diseases, and corneal changes after keratotomy and keratoplasty. A significant application is in the fitting of contact lenses. | corneal transplant | A surgical procedure to replace a damaged cornea with a healthy one from a donor's eye. Unlike transplantation of most other organs, the cornea tends to have a problem with transplant rejection. Corneal transplants are indicated in cases of severe corneal injury or corneal infection (corneal ulcer) which has left the cornea scarred. (27 Sep 1997) |
