In the Purple Martin, as with most species of birds, copulation is accomplished by the male climbing onto (or landing on) the back of the female, then both birds making contact with their exposed cloacas. The male quickly ejaculates his semen and dismounts. In martins, the entire process lasts but a couple seconds.
