a table used to display statistical data according to two characteristics, each having a number of mutually inclusive categories; categories of one characteristic are listed in rows and categories of the other characteristic are listed in columns. Statistical analysis (often using chi-squared or exact tests) can be readily applied to the rows and columns of the table. The most common is the 2 × 2 contingency t., having two rows and two columns. See also r × c contingency t.
