| thyrotoxic coma | Coma preceding death in severe hyperthyroidism, as in thyroid storm or thyrotoxic crisis. (05 Mar 2000) |

| trance coma | The deep sleep following major hypnosis. Synonym: trance coma. (05 Mar 2000) |
| uraemic coma | A metabolic encephalopathy caused by renal failure. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Kussmaul's coma | A severe metabolic derangement that occurs in the absence of insulin. Insulin allows the body to absorb glucose into cells for energy production. In the absence of insulin, the body starts to break down fats for fuel. A metabolic byproduct of fat metabolism is referred to as a ketone. The presence of elevated blood ketones in this setting is known as diabetic ketoacidosis. In extreme, untreated cases, this can lead to coma and death. (27 Sep 1997) |
| bacterial cast | A cast in the urine composed of bacteria. (05 Mar 2000) |
| blood cast | A cast usually formed in renal tubules, but may occur in bronchioles; consists of inspissated material that includes various elements of blood (i.e., erythrocytes, leukocytes, fibrin, and so on), resulting from bleeding into the glomerulus or tubule, or into the alveolus or bronchiole. (05 Mar 2000) |
| master cast | A replica of the prepared tooth surfaces, residual ridge areas, and/or other parts of the dental arch as reproduced from an impression. (05 Mar 2000) |
| red blood cell cast | A urinary cast composed of a matrix containing red cells in various stages of degeneration and visibility, characteristic of glomerular disease or renal parenchymal bleeding. Synonym: red cell cast. (05 Mar 2000) |
| red cell cast | A urinary cast composed of a matrix containing red cells in various stages of degeneration and visibility, characteristic of glomerular disease or renal parenchymal bleeding. Synonym: red cell cast. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cast | <orthopaedics> A molded orthopaedic appliance that may be composed of fibreglass or plaster useful in the immobilisation of a fracture site for the purposes of healing. (27 Sep 1997) |
| cast brace | A specially designed plaster or plastic cast incorporating hinges and other brace components; used in the treatment of fractures to promote early activity and early joint motion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| refractory cast | A cast made of material that will withstand the high temperatures of metal casting or soldering without disintegrating. Synonym: investment cast. (05 Mar 2000) |
| renal cast | Any type of cast formed in a renal tubule, and found in the urine consisting of various materials, e.g., albumin, cells, blood. Synonym: tube cast. (05 Mar 2000) |
| granular cast | A relatively dark, dense urinary cast of coarsely or finely particulate cellular debris and other proteinaceous material, frequently seen in chronic renal disease but also in the recovery phase of acute renal failure. See: waxy cast. (05 Mar 2000) |
| waxy cast | A form of urinary cast consisting of homogeneous proteinaceous material that has a high refractive index, in contrast to the low refractive index of hyaline cast's; waxy cast's probably represent an advanced stage of the disintegrative process that results in coarsely and finely granular cast's, and are usually indicative of oliguria or anuria.
