| Gowers' column | A bundle of fibres originating in the base of the posterior horn and zona intermedia throughout lumbosacral segments of the spinal cord, crossing to the opposite side and ascending in a peripheral position in the ventral half of the lateral funiculus. In its ascent through the rhombencephalon, the tract curves sharply dorsalward along the rostral border of the trigeminal motor nucleus, entering the cerebellum in a caudal direction over the dorsal surface of the superior cerebellar peduncle, and terminating as mossy fibres in the granular layer of the cortex of the cerebellar vermis. The bundle conveys proprioceptive and exteroceptive information largely from the opposite lower extremity. Synonym: tractus spinocerebellaris anterior, Gowers' column, Gowers' tract, ventral spinocerebellar tract. (05 Mar 2000) |

| Rolando's column | A slight ridge on either side of the medulla oblongata related to the descending trigeminal tract and nucleus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Clarke's column | A column of large neurons located in the base of the posterior gray column of the spinal cord, extending from the first thoracic through the second lumbar segment; it gives rise to the dorsal spinocerebellar tract of the same side. Synonym: nucleus thoracicus, Clarke's column, Clarke's nucleus, dorsal nucleus, nucleus dorsalis, Stilling's column, Stilling's nucleus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| column | <plant biology> The lower part of an awn in grasses, when distinctly different in form from the upper part, a structure (a gynostemium) in orchids which extends above the ovary of a flower and incorporates stigma, style and stamens. (15 Jan 1998) |
| column chromatography | A form of partition, adsorption, ion exchange, or affinity chromatography in which one phase is liquid (aqueous) flowing down a column packed with the second phase, a solid; the dissolved substances form a partition between the solid and liquid phases depending on the chemical and physical conditions of each phase; the more strongly adsorbed solutes reach the bottom of the column later than the less strongly adsorbed ones. (05 Mar 2000) |
| column of bertin | <radiology> Partial hypertrophy of the renal cortex protruding into the renal sinus, seen on ultrasound, not pathologic--incidental finding (12 Dec 1998) |
| column of fornix | That part of the fornix that curves down in front of the thalamus and the interventricular foramen of Monro, then continues through the hypothalamus to the mamillary body; consisting primarily of fibres originating in the hippocampus and subiculum, the column of fornix is the direct continuation of the body of the fornix. Synonym: columna fornicis, anterior pillar of fornix. (05 Mar 2000) |
| column of Spitzka-Lissauer | See: dorsolateral fasciculus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| winogradsky column | <apparatus> A glass column with an anaerobic lower zone and an aerobic upper zone, which allows growth of microorganisms under conditions similar to those found in a nutrient-rich lake. (09 Oct 1997) |
| posterior column | The pronounced, dorsolaterally oriented ridge of gray matter in each lateral half of the spinal cord, corresponding to the posterior or dorsal horn appearing in transverse sections of the cord. Synonym: columna posterior, dorsal column of spinal cord, posterior column of spinal cord. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posterior column cordotomy | Division of the posterior column of the spinal cord. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posterior column of spinal cord | The pronounced, dorsolaterally oriented ridge of gray matter in each lateral half of the spinal cord, corresponding to the posterior or dorsal horn appearing in transverse sections of the cord. Synonym: columna posterior, dorsal column of spinal cord, posterior column of spinal cord. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posterior white column of the spinal cord | The large wedge-shaped fibre bundle lying between the posterior gray column and the posterior median septum, and composed largely of dorsal root fibres. Synonym: funiculus posterior, dorsal funiculus, funiculus dorsalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| special somatic afferent column | A column of gray matter in the hindbrain of the embryo, represented in the adult by the nuclei of the auditory and vestibular nerves. (05 Mar 2000) |
| special visceral efferent column | A column of gray matter in the hindbrain of the embryo, represented in the adult by the trigeminal and facial nuclei and the nucleus ambiguus. (05 Mar 2000) |
