collateral circulation The small vessels that connect branches of the coronary arteries. Sometimes these vessels gradually enlarge to increase the blood supply to an area of heart muscle not receiving an adequate supply of blood and oxygen because of an obstructed coronary artery. This term also refers to connecting branches between veins, eg, the saphenous vein.
