coeliac rickets Arrested growth, and osseous deformities associated with defective absorption of fat and calcium in coeliac disease.
(05 Mar 2000)
coeliac sprue <gastroenterology> An inherited disease where the intestinal lining is inflamed in response to the ingestion of a protein known as gluten. Gluten is present in many grains including rye, oats, barley and triticale.
Symptoms in infants include diarrhoea, slow growth, bloody stools, weight loss, vomiting and clay-coloured stools. Symptoms in adults include abdominal distention, abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss, bone pain and bone tenderness. Treatment involves the life-long avoidance of gluten.
(10 Jan 1998)
coeliac syndrome <disease, gastroenterology> Gluten enteropathy: atrophy of villi in small intestine leads to impaired absorption of nutrients.
Caused by sensitivity to gluten (protein of wheat and rye). Sufferers have serum antibodies to gluten and show delayed hypersensitivity to gluten, the risk factor is ten times greater in HLA B8 positive individuals.
(18 Nov 1997)
coeliac trunk Origin, abdominal aorta just below diaphragm; branches, left gastric, common hepatic, splenic.
Synonym: truncus coeliacus, arteria coeliaca, coeliac artery, coeliac axis, Haller's tripod.
(05 Mar 2000)
sprue / coeliac disease <radiology> Gluten enteropathy, coeliac disease (kids), nontropical sprue (adults), hypersensitivity to gluten, treatment: remove gluten from diet, tropical sprue, clinically and radiologically similar to nontropical sprue, treatment: folate, B-12, antibiotics, associated with ** transient intussusception, oesophageal carcinoma and small bowel carcinoma (QUESTIONABLE!!), diffuse intestinal lymphoma (rare; except in Middle East)
(12 Dec 1998)
disease, adult coeliac This condition results from an immune (allergic) reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat and related grains and present in many foods that we eat. Sprue causes impaired absorption and digestion of nutrients through the small intestine. Symptoms include requent diarrhoea and weight loss. A skin condition called dermatitis herpetiformis can be associated with coeliac sprue. The most accurate diagnostic test for sprue is a biopsy of the involved small bowel. Treatment is to avoid gluten in the diet. Medications are used for refractory (stubborn) sprue. Known under a number of other names, including coeliac sprue.
(12 Dec 1998)
infantile coeliac disease Gluten-sensitive enteropathy appearing in infancy, often before the age of 9 months and characterised by acute onset, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and "failure to thrive."
(05 Mar 2000)
afferent lymphatic A lymphatic vessel entering, or bringing lymph to, a node.
Synonym: vas lymphaticum afferens, afferent vessel.
(05 Mar 2000)
aggregated lymphatic follicles Lymphoid organs located in the sub mucosal tissue of the mammalian gut containing very high proportions of IgA secreting precursor cells. The patches have B and T dependent regions and germinal centres. A specialised epithelium lies between the patch and the intestine. Involved in gut associated immunity.
(18 Nov 1997)
aggregated lymphatic follicles of vermiform appendix Masses of lymphoid tissue in the submucous coat of the vermiform appendix.
Synonym: folliculi lymphatici aggregati appendicis vermiformis.
(05 Mar 2000)
aggregated lymphatic nodules Lymphoid organs located in the sub mucosal tissue of the mammalian gut containing very high proportions of IgA secreting precursor cells. The patches have B and T dependent regions and germinal centres. A specialised epithelium lies between the patch and the intestine. Involved in gut associated immunity.
(18 Nov 1997)
cardiac lymphatic ring A group of lymph nodes surrounding the cardia of the stomach.
Synonym: annulus lymphaticus cardiae, cardiac lymphatic ring.
(05 Mar 2000)
gastric lymphatic follicles Lymphoid tissue within the lamina propria which, especially in early life, collect in small masses similar to intestinal solitary lymphatic follicles.
Synonym: folliculi lymphatici gastrici.
(05 Mar 2000)
right lymphatic duct One of the two terminal lymph vessels, a short trunk, about 2 cm in length, formed by the union of the right jugular lymphatic vessel and vessels from the lymph nodes of the right superior limb, thoracic wall, and both lungs; it lies on the right side of the root of the neck and empties into the right brachiocephalic vein.
Synonym: ductus lymphaticus dexter, ductus thoracicus dexter.
(05 Mar 2000)
hemic and lymphatic diseases Haematologic diseases and diseases of the lymphatic system collectively. Hemic diseases include disorders involving the formed elements (e.g., erythrocyte aggregation, intravascular) and chemical components (e.g., blood protein disorders); lymphatic diseases include disorders relating to lymph, lymph nodes, and lymphocytes.
