In addition, C. difficile produces an exotoxin causing severe intestinal necrosis. C. perfringens produces a number of exotoxins causing gas gangrene, intestinal necrosis, and hemolysis, some with cardiotoxic, deoxyribonuclease, and hyaluronidase activity, and an enterotoxin causing acute food poisoning.
