| reverse banding | <technique> A reverse Giemsa chromosome banding method that produces bands complementary to G-bands; induced by treatment with high temperature, low pH, or acridine orange staining; often used together with G-banding on human karyotype to determine whether there are deletions. (05 Mar 2000) |

| chromosome banding | Staining of bands, or chromosome segments, allowing the precise identification of individual chromosomes or parts of chromosomes. Applications include the determination of chromosome rearrangements in malformation syndromes and cancer, the chemistry of chromosome segments, chromosome changes during evolution, and, in conjunction with cell hybridization studies, chromosome mapping. (12 Dec 1998) |
| prometaphase banding | Banding done in the stage of mitosis intermediate between prophase and metaphase. (05 Mar 2000) |
| high-resolution banding | Banding, especially in prophase, which increases the clarity and number of discernible chromosome bands. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pulmonary artery banding | A surgical method of decreasing pulmonary blood flow and thereby volume overload of the left ventricle, alleviating CHF in certain congenital heart defects. (05 Mar 2000) |
| NOR-banding | A procedure which utilises a silver stain that preferentially accumulates in the nucleoli-organizing regions, i.e., the satellite regions of the acrocentric chromosomes. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Q-banding | <cell biology, technique> A fluorescent stain for chromosomes which produces specific banding patterns for each pair of homologous chromosomes. The acridine dye derivative, quinacrine hydrochloride, or other derivatives like quinacrine mustard dihydrochloride produces a green-yellow fluorescence at pH 4.5 in chromosome segments rich in constitutive heterochromatin with deoxyadenylate-deoxythymidilate (A-T) bases of DNA. The centromeric regions of human chromosomes 3, 4, and 13 are specifically stained, as are satellites of some acrocentric chromosomes and the end of the long arm of the Y chromosome. Banding patterns are similar to those obtained with G-banding stain and similar fluorescent stain results are seen with the antibiotics adriamycin and daunomycin, as well as the tertiary dyes butyl proflavine and dapi, and the bisbenzimidazole dye hoechst 33258. See: banding patterns, Q bands, quinacrine. Synonym: quinacrine chromosome banding stain. (12 Jul 2000) |
| Trusler's rule for pulmonary artery banding | A method that gives guidance as to the correct tightness of the band; the degree of banding for a complex congenital cardiac anomaly with bidirectional shunting less than that for simple ones. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Abbott's stain | <technique> Spores are stained blue with alkaline methylene blue; bodies of the bacilli become pink with eosin counterstain. (05 Mar 2000) |
| aceto-orcein stain | <technique> A stain used for chromosomes in air-dried or squashed cytologic material. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acid-fast stain | <technique> A staining technique used to determine the cell wall property of a microorganism. After stained with dye such as hot carbolfuschin, an acid-fast organism, (for example Mycobacterium species) will retain the colour in its cell wall after being washed with acid-alcohol. (13 Nov 1997) |
| acid stain | <technique> A dye in which the anion is the coloured component of the dye molecule, e.g., sodium eosinate (eosin). (05 Mar 2000) |
| Ag-AS stain | <technique> A stain for the acid protein component of nucleolar regions which are active or which were transcriptionally active in the preceding interphase; uses silver nitrate, ammoniacal silver, and formalin. Synonym: Ag-AS stain. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Albert's stain | <technique> A stain for diphtheria bacilli and their metachromatic granules; contains toluidine blue, methyl green, glacial acetic acid, alcohol, and distilled water. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Altmann's anilin-acid fuchsin stain | <technique> A mixture of picric acid, anilin, and acid fuchsin which stains mitochondria crimson against a yellow background. (05 Mar 2000) |
