This represents the capacity of a soil to exchange positive ions (K, Ca, Mg, NH 4) with the plants. The CEC value is due to the humus-clay aggregate, and it may be estimated that, at the surface, the soil CEC is equal to the CEC of the clays plus that of the humus. Normally, the surface CEC should be higher than the bottom CEC. The values typically encountered in our types of soil range from 10 to 25.
