| cartilages of nose | See: lateral cartilage of nose, greater alar cartilage, nasal septal cartilage, cartilago vomeronasalis, lesser alar cartilages, accessory nasal cartilages. Synonym: cartilagines nasi. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| mandibular cartilage | A cartilage bar in the mandibular arch that forms a temporary supporting structure in the embryonic mandible; the cartilagenous primordia of the malleus and incus develop from its proximal end, and it also gives rise to the sphenomandibular and anterior malleolar ligaments. Synonym: Meckel's cartilage. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| parachordal cartilage | Cartilage primordia adjacent on either side to the cephalic portion of the notochord in young embryos; they represent an initial step in the formation of the chondrocranium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| paraseptal cartilage | A narrow strip of cartilage located between the lower edge of the cartilage of the nasal septum and the vomer. Synonym: Jacobson's cartilage, paraseptal cartilage, vomer cartilagineus, vomerine cartilage, vomeronasal cartilage. (05 Mar 2000) |
| parenchymatous cartilage | An embryonic or immature stage of cartilage in which it consists chiefly of cells with very little matrix. Synonym: parenchymatous cartilage. (05 Mar 2000) |
| meatal cartilage | The cartilage that forms the wall of the lateral part of the external acoustic meatus. It is incomplete above and is firmly attached to the margins of the bony part of the external meatus. Synonym: cartilago meatus acustici, meatal cartilage. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Reichert's cartilage | A cartilage in the mesenchyme of the second branchial arch in the embryo, from which develop the stapes, the styloid processes, the stylohyoid ligaments, and the lesser cornua of the hyoid bone. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Meckel's cartilage | A cartilage bar in the mandibular arch that forms a temporary supporting structure in the embryonic mandible; the cartilagenous primordia of the malleus and incus develop from its proximal end, and it also gives rise to the sphenomandibular and anterior malleolar ligaments. Synonym: Meckel's cartilage. (05 Mar 2000) |

| medial surface of arytenoid cartilage | medial surface of arytenoid cartilage |
| cellular cartilage | An embryonic or immature stage of cartilage in which it consists chiefly of cells with very little matrix. Synonym: parenchymatous cartilage. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vocal process of arytenoid cartilage | The lower end of the anterior margin of the arytenoid cartilage to which the vocal cord is attached. Synonym: processus vocalis cartilaginis arytenoidei, vocal process. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vomerine cartilage | A narrow strip of cartilage located between the lower edge of the cartilage of the nasal septum and the vomer. Synonym: Jacobson's cartilage, paraseptal cartilage, vomer cartilagineus, vomerine cartilage, vomeronasal cartilage. (05 Mar 2000) |
| reticular cartilage | <anatomy> Rarely used terms for fibrocartilage. (05 Mar 2000) |
| periotic cartilage | A cartilaginous mass on either side of the chondrocranium surrounding the developing auditory vesicle in the foetus; the otic capsule in its early cartilaginous stage. (05 Mar 2000) |
| greater alar cartilage | One of a pair of cartilages that form the tip of the nose. It consists of a medial crus that extends into the nasal septum with its fellow of the opposite side, and a lateral crus that forms the anterior part of the wing of the nose. Synonym: cartilago alaris major. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cartilage |
A translucent, elastic tissue inside the hinge that supplements the external ligament in binding the two valves of a bivalve together, attached to the resilifers and perhaps reinforced by a calcareous coating, the lithodesma.

| cartilage |
(KAR-tih-lij) A type of connective tissue that contains cells (chondrocytes) surrounded by a tough but flexible matrix. The cartilage matrix is made of several types of the protein collagen and several types of proteoglycans, which are combinations of protein and long sugar molecules called glycosaminoglycans. Chondroitin sulfate is the major glycosaminoglycan in cartilage.
