| Neufeld capsular swelling | Increase in opacity and visibility of the capsule of capsulated organisms exposed to specific agglutinating anticapsular antibodies. Synonym: Neufeld reaction, quellung phenomenon, quellung reaction, quellung test. Scrotal swelling, the swelling formed after the embryonic genital swellings have fused together, become spherical, and migrated caudally to the base of the penis; just before birth the testis comes to lie within it. | alcoholic cirrhosis | <gastroenterology> Alcoholic cirrhosis is a condition of irreversible liver disease due to the chronic inflammatory and toxic effects of ethanol on the liver. In cirrhosis, the liver cells are replaced by fibrous scar tissue. Fibrosis leads to the development of portal hypertension. The development of cirrhosis is directly related to the duration and quantity of alcohol consumption. | posthepatitic cirrhosis | <pathology> This is a form of continuing liver inflammation that results in liver cell death. Causes include viral infection (hepatitis D, hepatitis B, hepatitis C), autoimmune disease, drug ingestion or metabolic causes.
