capsula bulbi A condensation of connective tissue on the outer aspect of the sclera from which it is separated by a narrow cleftlike episcleral space; the sheath is attached to the sclera near the sclerocorneal junction and blends with the fascia of the extraocular muscles.
Synonym: vagina bulbi, capsula bulbi, eye capsule, fascia bulbi, sheath of eyeball, Tenon's capsule, vagina oculi.
(05 Mar 2000)
capsula cordis <anatomy> A double membranous sac which envelops and protects the heart. The layer in contact with the heart is referred to as the visceral layer, the outer layer in contact with surrounding organs is the parietal pericardium. In between the two layers is the pericardial space.
(27 Sep 1997)
capsula externa A thin lamina of white substance separating the claustrum from the putamen. It joins the internal capsule at either extremity of the putamen, forming a capsule of white matter external to the lenticular nucleus.
Synonym: capsula externa, periclaustral lamina.
(05 Mar 2000)
capsula extrema The layer of white matter separating the claustrum from the cortex of the insula, probably representing largely corticopetal and corticofugal fibres of the insular cortex.
Synonym: capsula extrema.
(05 Mar 2000)
capsula glomeruli The expanded beginning of a nephron composed of an inner and outer layer: the visceral layer consists of podocytes which surround a tuft of capillaries (glomerulus); the parietal layer is simple squamous epithelium which becomes cuboidal at the tubular pole.
Synonym: capsula glomeruli, Bowman's capsule, malpighian capsule, Muller's capsule.
(05 Mar 2000)
capsula interna <anatomy, neurology> A massive layer (8 to 10 mm thick) of white matter separating the caudate nucleus and thalamus (medial) from the more laterally situated lentiform nucleus (globus pallidus and putamen). It consists of 1) fibres ascending from the thalamus to the cerebral cortex that compose, among others, the visual, auditory, and somatic sensory radiations, and 2) fibres descending from the cerebral cortex to the thalamus, subthalamic region, midbrain, hindbrain, and spinal cord.
The internal capsule is the major route by which the cerebral cortex is connected with the brainstem and spinal cord. Laterally and superiorly it is continuous with the corona radiata which forms a major part of the cerebral hemisphere's white matter; caudally and medially it continues, much reduced in size, as the crus cerebri which contains, among others, the pyramidal tract.
On horizontal section it appears in the form of a V opening out laterally; the V's obtuse angle is called genu (knee). Its anterior and posterior limbs, respectively, the crus anterior and crus posterior.
Synonym: capsula interna.
(05 Mar 2000)
capsula lentis The capsule enclosing the lens of the eye.
Synonym: capsula lentis, crystalline capsule, lenticular capsule, phacocyst.
(05 Mar 2000)
capsula lienis The fibrous capsule of the spleen, containing collagen, elastic fibres, and smooth muscle.
Synonym: tunica fibrosa splenis, tunica fibrosa lienis, capsula lienis, tunica propria lienis.
(05 Mar 2000)
capsula vasculosa lentis In the embryo, the vascular mesenchymal capsule that invests the lens of the eye; the vessels of the dorsal part of the capsule are branches of the hyaloid artery; those of the ventral part are derived from the anterior ciliary arteries; normally all the vessels are atrophied by the end of the eighth month of intrauterine life.
(05 Mar 2000)
rami glandulares arteriae thyroideae inferioris <anatomy, artery> Branches of inferior thyroid artery to thyroid and parathyroid glands, anastomosing with branches of superior thyroid artery.
Synonym: rami glandulares arteriae thyroideae inferioris.
(05 Mar 2000)
rami oesophageales arteriae thyroideae inferioris <anatomy, artery> Distribution: upper one-quarter of oesophagus; anastomosis: oesophageal branches of thoracic aorta.
Synonym: rami oesophageales arteriae thyroideae inferioris.
(05 Mar 2000)
rami pharyngeales arteriae thyroideae inferioris <anatomy, artery> Distributed to laryngopharynx.
Synonym: rami pharyngeales arteriae thyroideae inferioris.
(05 Mar 2000)
rami tracheales arteriae thyroideae inferioris Tracheal branches of inferior thyroid artery.
See: tracheal branches.
(05 Mar 2000)
ramus glandulares anterior/lateralis/posterior arteriae thyroideae superioris glandular branches of anterior/lateral/posterior branches of superior thyroid artery
ramus posterior arteriae thyroideae superioris <anatomy, artery> Branch of superior thyroid artery which descends to supply the apical portion of the ipsilateral lobe of the thyroid, continuing along the posterior border of the gland to anastomose with the inferior thyroid artery.
Synonym: ramus posterior arteriae thyroideae superioris.
