ureteric bud The primordial cellular outgrowth from the mesonephric duct that gives rise to the epithelial lining of the ureter, of the pelvis, and calyces of the kidney, and of the straight collecting tubules.
Synonym: ureteric bud.
(05 Mar 2000)
limb bud The limbs of vertebrates start as outpushings of mesenchyme surrounded by a simple epithelium. The distal region is referred to as the progress zone. There has been extensive study of positional information within the limb bud that determines, for example: the proximal distal pattern of bone development and the anterior posterior specification of digits.
(18 Nov 1997)
liver bud The primordial cellular diverticulum of the embryonic foregut endoderm that gives rise to the parenchyma of the liver.
(05 Mar 2000)
lung bud The endodermal lung primordium which will give rise to the epithelial lining of the respiratory tract.
Synonym: lung bud.
(05 Mar 2000)
african swine fever-like viruses An unnamed, unclassified genus of DNA viruses with a single species: african swine fever virus.
(12 Dec 1998)
anterior pituitary-like hormone A glycoprotein with a carbohydrate fraction composed of d-galactose and hexosamine, extracted from the urine of pregnant women and produced by the placental trophoblastic cells; its most important role appears to be stimulation, during the first trimester, of ovarian secretion of the oestrogen and progesterone required for the integrity of conceptus; it appears to play no significant role in the last two trimesters of pregnancy, as the oestrogen and progesterone are then formed by the placenta.
Synonym: anterior pituitary-like hormone, choriogonadotropin, chorionic gonadotropic hormone, chorionic gonadotrophic hormone, placenta gonadotropin, placentagonadotropin.
(05 Mar 2000)
Artemia trypsin-like proteinase <enzyme> Cysteine proteinase involved in lipovitellin degradation
Registry number: EC 3.4.22.-
(26 Jun 1999)
box-like heart <radiology> Ebstein's anomaly, massive cardiomegaly, primarily RA enlargement
(12 Dec 1998)
broom-like <botany> Describes a plant which has many branches parallel or almost so and usually erect.
(09 Oct 1997)
gallus adeno-like virus A virus with characteristics of adenovirus, not known to be associated with natural disease.
Synonym: gallus adeno-like virus.
(05 Mar 2000)
GCK-like kinase <enzyme> Similar to human germinal centre kinase.
Registry number: EC 2.7.1.-
Synonym: glk kinase
(26 Jun 1999)
receptors, insulin-like-growth factor I Specific proteins on or in cells to which insulin-like growth factor I (somatomedin c) binds and thereby modifies the function of the cells. These receptors contain transmembrane and cytosolic domains, bind igf-I preferentially, and have high-affinity sites for igf-II. The alpha-subunit has a mw of 130 kD and the beta subunit possesses tyrosine kinase activity.
(12 Dec 1998)
receptors, insulin-like-growth-factor II Specific proteins on or in cells to which insulin-like growth factor II and mannose-6-phosphate bind and thereby modify the function of the cells. These receptors have a mw of 250 kD and possess no tyrosine kinase activity.
(12 Dec 1998)
reovirus-like agent <virology> Genus of the Reoviridae having a double layered capsid and 11 double stranded RNA molecules in the genome. They have a wheel like appearance in the electron microscope and cause acute diarrhoeal disease in their mammalian and avian hosts.
Probably the most important cause of severe dehydrating diarrhoea in children under three years of age worldwide.
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, low-grade fever and diarrhoea. Aggressive fluid replacement is generally required.
(27 Sep 1997)
pelle-like protein kinase <enzyme> Mplk - mouse pelle-like kinase; mammalian homolog of drosophila pelle protein; expression is developmentally regulated and is greatest in liver; genbank l08476
Registry number: EC 2.7.10.-
Synonym: mplk (protein)
