a long piece of wood, loaded in compression, will bend out to one side if enough load is applied. This is a natural reaction to the stiffness, or elasticity, of the wood. When the wood bows outward, the fibers within the wood develop a bending stress in addition to the compression stress, and it takes very little additional load to overstress the wood and cause it to break. Buckling is directly dependent on the length of the wood - a shorter piece resists buckling better. ...
