first branch of the aortic arch, dividing into the right subclavian artery and right common carotid artery as terminal branches (the left common carotid artery and left subclavian artery arise directly from the aortic arch as its next two consecutive branches). brachiocephalic vein = convergence of the subclavian vein and internal jugular vein. The short right and longer left brachiocephalic veins merge to form the superior vena cava.
