| betel nut |
"beetle-nut" -- Vietnamese chew the nut from the betel palm for its mild narcotic effect and lots of dark red spit. If chewed for months or years, it turns the teeth black -- not attractive. Some Vietnamese men chewed betel, but it was more often used by women, especially in the countryside.
