| ax | axillary; axis, axial |
| axial point | One of two point's in a compound optical system so related that a ray directed toward the first point will appear to have passed through the second point parallel to its original direction. Synonym: axial point. (05 Mar 2000) |

| axial projection | Radiographic projection devised to obtain direct visualization of the base of the skull. Synonym: axial view, base projection, submental vertex projection, submentovertical projection, verticosubmental view. (05 Mar 2000) |
| axial section | A cross section obtained by slicing, actually or through imaging techniques, the body or any part of the body structure, in a horizontal plane, i.e., a plane which intersects the longitudinal axis at a right angle. Since actual sectioning in the transverse plane results in an inferior and a superior portion, an anatomical transverse section may be a two-dimensional view of the cut surface on the inferior aspect of the superior portion, or of the superior aspect of the inferior portion. By convention, in medical imaging transverse sections demonstrate the former unless otherwise stated. Synonym: axial section. (05 Mar 2000) |
| axial skeleton | Articulated bones of head and vertebral column, i.e., head and trunk, as opposed to the appendicular skeleton, the articulated bones of the upper and lower limbs. Synonym: skeleton axiale. (05 Mar 2000) |
| axial surface | The surface of a tooth parallel with its long axis; the axial surface's are the vestibular (labial or buccal), lingual, and contact (mesial or distal). (05 Mar 2000) |
| axial view | Radiographic projection devised to obtain direct visualization of the base of the skull. Synonym: axial view, base projection, submental vertex projection, submentovertical projection, verticosubmental view. (05 Mar 2000) |
| computerised axial tomography | Cat scanning adds X-ray images with the aid of a computer to generate cross-sectional views anatomy. It can identify normal and abnormal structures and be used to guide procedures. CAT scanning is painless. Iodine-containing contrast material is sometimes used in CAT scanning. If you are having a CAT scan and are allergic to iodine or contrast materials, you should notify your physicians and radiology staff. (12 Dec 1998) |
| half-axial projection | Reverse tilted AP radiographic projection devised to permit demonstration of the entire occipital bone, foramen magnum, and dorsum sellae, as well as the petrous ridges. Synonym: half axial view, half-axial projection, Towne view. (05 Mar 2000) |
| half axial view | Reverse tilted AP radiographic projection devised to permit demonstration of the entire occipital bone, foramen magnum, and dorsum sellae, as well as the petrous ridges. Synonym: half axial view, half-axial projection, Towne view. (05 Mar 2000) |
| extra-axial | Off the axis; applied to intracerebral lesions that do not arise from the brain itself. (05 Mar 2000) |
| artery of pulp | The first section of a penicillus of the spleen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| radicular pulp | That part of the dental pulp contained within the apical or root portion of the tooth. Synonym: pulpa radicularis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vertebral pulp | The soft fibrocartilage central portion of the intervertebral disk; regarded as a derivative of the notochord. Synonym: gelatinous nucleus, nucleus gelatinosus, vertebral pulp. (05 Mar 2000) |
| red pulp | Splenic pulp seen grossly as a reddish brown substance, due to its abundance of red blood cells, consisting of splenic sinuses and the tissue intervening between them (splenic cords). (05 Mar 2000) |
| red pulp cords | The tissue occurring between the venous sinuses in the spleen. Synonym: Billroth's cords, red pulp cords. (05 Mar 2000) |
