| axial section | A cross section obtained by slicing, actually or through imaging techniques, the body or any part of the body structure, in a horizontal plane, i.e., a plane which intersects the longitudinal axis at a right angle. Since actual sectioning in the transverse plane results in an inferior and a superior portion, an anatomical transverse section may be a two-dimensional view of the cut surface on the inferior aspect of the superior portion, or of the superior aspect of the inferior portion. By convention, in medical imaging transverse sections demonstrate the former unless otherwise stated. Synonym: axial section. (05 Mar 2000) |

| axial skeleton | Articulated bones of head and vertebral column, i.e., head and trunk, as opposed to the appendicular skeleton, the articulated bones of the upper and lower limbs. Synonym: skeleton axiale. (05 Mar 2000) |
| axial surface | The surface of a tooth parallel with its long axis; the axial surface's are the vestibular (labial or buccal), lingual, and contact (mesial or distal). (05 Mar 2000) |
| axial view | Radiographic projection devised to obtain direct visualization of the base of the skull. Synonym: axial view, base projection, submental vertex projection, submentovertical projection, verticosubmental view. (05 Mar 2000) |
| axial walls of the pulp chambers | The wall's parallel with the long axis of a tooth: the mesial, distal, buccal, and lingual wall's. (05 Mar 2000) |
| computerised axial tomography | Cat scanning adds X-ray images with the aid of a computer to generate cross-sectional views anatomy. It can identify normal and abnormal structures and be used to guide procedures. CAT scanning is painless. Iodine-containing contrast material is sometimes used in CAT scanning. If you are having a CAT scan and are allergic to iodine or contrast materials, you should notify your physicians and radiology staff. (12 Dec 1998) |
| half axial view | Reverse tilted AP radiographic projection devised to permit demonstration of the entire occipital bone, foramen magnum, and dorsum sellae, as well as the petrous ridges. Synonym: half axial view, half-axial projection, Towne view. (05 Mar 2000) |
| extra-axial | Off the axis; applied to intracerebral lesions that do not arise from the brain itself. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anteroposterior projection | The alternative frontal radiographic projection, used mainly in bedside or portable radiography. Synonym: anteroposterior projection. (05 Mar 2000) |
| apical lordotic projection | In computed tomography or other imaging techniques requiring reconstruction from multiple projections, an algorithm for calculating the contribution of each voxel of the structure to the measured ray data, in order to generate an image; the oldest and simplest method of image reconstruction. Synonym: apical lordotic projection. (05 Mar 2000) |
| AP projection | The alternative frontal radiographic projection, used mainly in bedside or portable radiography. Synonym: anteroposterior projection. (05 Mar 2000) |
| base projection | Radiographic projection devised to obtain direct visualization of the base of the skull. Synonym: axial view, base projection, submental vertex projection, submentovertical projection, verticosubmental view. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Caldwell projection | Inclined PA radiographic projection devised to permit visualization of orbital structures unobstructed by the petrous ridges. Synonym: Caldwell view. (05 Mar 2000) |
| radiography, dual-energy scanned projection | A method of producing a high-quality scan by digitizing and subtracting the images produced by high- and low-energy X-rays. (12 Dec 1998) |
| PA projection | The standard frontal chest film projection; radiographic skull projection with the petrous ridge superimposed on the orbits. Synonym: posteroanterior projection. (05 Mar 2000) |
