| atypical pneumonia | <chest medicine> This refers to a type of pneumonia that does not follow the typical signs and symptoms of pneumonia. A number of different viral and bacterial agents have been identified which can cause this form of respiratory infection. Examples include Chlamydia pneumonia, psittacosis, Mycoplasma, influenza A or B, adenovirus and Legionella. Antibiotics will be necessary in all but the mildest cases. Symptoms generally improve in less than 2 weeks. (27 Sep 1997) |

| atypical pseudocholinesterase | A genetic variant of cholinesterase that fails to catalyze the hydrolysis of succinylcholine. See: dibucaine number, fluoride number. (05 Mar 2000) |
| atypical verrucous endocarditis | Verrucous endocarditis sometimes associated with disseminated lupus erythematosus. Synonym: atypical verrucous endocarditis, Libman-Sacks syndrome, nonbacterial verrucous endocarditis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| regressing atypical histiocytosis | A rare disease characterised clinically by multiple ulcerating cutaneous papules and nodules which show spontaneous regression; the skin is infiltrated by malignant-appearing histiocytes. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pneumonia, atypical interstitial, of cattle | A cattle disease of uncertain cause, probably an allergic reaction. (12 Dec 1998) |
| mycobacterium, atypical | So-called atypical species of the genus mycobacterium. They are also called tuberculoid bacilli, i.e.: m. Buruli (see m. Ulcerans), m. Chelonae, m. Duvalii, m. Flavescens, m. Fortuitum, m. Gilvum, m. Gordonae, m. Intracellulare (see mycobacterium avium complex), m. Kansasii (kansas), m. Marinum, m. Obuense, m. Scrofulaceum, m. Szulgai, m. Terrae, m. Obuense, m. Gilvum, m. Duvali, m. Szulgai, m. Intracellulare (see mycobacterium avium complex), m. Xenopi (littorale), m. Ulcerans, m. Buruli, m. Terrae, m. Fortuitum (minetti, giae), m. Chelonae. | primary atypical pneumonia | An acute systemic disease with involvement of the lungs, caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae and marked by high fever, cough, relatively few physical signs, and scattered densities on X-rays; usually associated with development of cold agglutinins and antibodies to the bacteria. Synonym: atypical pneumonia, Eaton agent pneumonia, mycoplasmal pneumonia. (05 Mar 2000) |

| mammary neuralgia | Neuralgia of the intercostal nerve or nerves supplying the breast. (05 Mar 2000) |
| geniculate neuralgia | A severe paroxysmal lancinating pain deep in the ear, on the anterior wall of the external meatus, and on a small area just in front of the pinna. Synonym: geniculate otalgia, Hunt's neuralgia, neuralgia facialis vera. (05 Mar 2000) |
| red neuralgia | Disease marked by paroxysmal, bilateral vasodilatation, particularly of the extremities, with burning pain, and increased skin temperature and redness. (12 Dec 1998) |
| glossopharyngeal neuralgia | Paroxysmal lancinating pain in the throat or palate. Synonym: glossopharyngeal tic. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cervico-brachial neuralgia | Neuralgic pain of acute onset caused by lesions of the peripheral nerves or nerve roots affecting the upper limb, shoulder girdle, or brachial plexus. (12 Dec 1998) |
| mesencephalic nucleus of trigeminal nerve | <anatomy, nerve> A long, narrow plate of unipolar neurons extending throughout the length of the midbrain, in and along the lateral angle of the central gray substance. The nucleus is the single known instance of primary sensory neurons enclosed in the central nervous system instead of in a peripheral sensory ganglion. Its peripheral axonal processes pass with the trigeminal nerve, give collaterals to the trigeminal motor nucleus, and terminate in the muscles of mastication. Synonym: nucleus tractus mesencephali nervi trigemini. (05 Mar 2000) |
