assortative m. a nonrandom system of mating in which choice of a mate is influenced by phenotype. Among human beings, positive assortative mating occurs, for example, when tall men choose tall women; or short women, short men. Negative assortative mating occurs when phenotypically dissimilar mates are chosen, e.g., tall men and short women, or tall women and short men. Nonrandom mating can affect Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (q.v.) in a population.
