The transliteration of a Greek word meaning "transformation." An anamorphosis is the transformation of an image so that it is unrecognizable except from a particular point of view or with the aid of a special lens. The strange figure, a distorted skull, at the bottom of Hans Holbein the Younger's painting, "The Ambassadors" (London, National Gallery), is an excellent example of anamorphosis.
