| alcoholic polyneuropathy | <neurology> A disorder that occurs secondary to the damage to nerve cells from habitual alcohol abuse. The effects of alcoholic polyneuropathy may be due in part to the direct toxic effect alcohol has on nervous tissue in combination with specific nutritional deficiencies (for example B1 or thiamin deficiency and B12 deficiency). Common symptoms include sensory changes, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, muscle cramps, heat intolerance, impotence, difficulty urinating, swallowing difficulty, speech impairment, diarrhoea and constipation.
