| 설명 | 1. 생명활동이 정지되어 다시 원상태로 돌아오지 않는 생물의 상태. 삶의 종말을 말한다. 예를 들어 아메바 등의 단세포 생물에서는 2개체로 분열될 때가 죽음이라고 말할 수 있을지 모르나 다세포 생물에 있어서는 세포분열은 단순한 성장의 한 과정이다. 생물은 생식세포를 매개로 생명을 영원히 존속시키는 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 인간을 포함한 고등동물에 한정한다고 하면 죽음이란 그 개체를 구성하는 모든 조직 세포의 생활기능의 정지라고 말할 수 있다. 따라서, 국부적인 한 부분의 생활기능의 정지만으로는 죽음이라고 할 수 없다. 2. 사람이 죽음. 사람의 죽음은 네 개의 측면이 있다. 즉 ① 육체적 죽음(biological death), ② 심리적 죽음(psychological death), ③ 사회적 죽음(social death), ④ 문화적 죽음(culture death)으로 생각할 수 있다. 인간의 일생은 단지 생명의 연장 뿐 아니라 질적 측면에서 심리적, 사회적, 문화적인 충실함이 필요하다. 근년에 의료기술의 눈부신 발달에 따라서 더욱 생활의 질이 중요시되고 있다. 일반적으로 육체적인 죽음의 정의는 모든 생체기능의 영구적 정지. 즉 ① 전체뇌기능, ② 호흡계의 자발기능, ③ 순환계의 자발기능, 이 모든 것의 비가역적으로 정지되었음을 말한다. |

| 설명 | 한 살 이하의 건강한 아기가 아무런 조짐이나 원인 없이 갑자기 사망했을 경우에 내리는 진단이다. 이 증후군은 생후 1~4개월 사이에 가장 많이 발생하며, 대부분 밤 10시에서 오전 10시 사이에 발생한다. 조산하거나 부모가 흡연자일 경우, 20세 이하 산모의 초산, 임신전 건강관리에 소홀한 산모에게서 태어난 영아에게서 많이 발생한다. 이 증후군으로 사망한 영아의 형제일 경우 일반적인 영아보다 걸릴 확률이 높은 것으로 알려져 있다. |

| 설명 | 혈액이 응고되는 것을 방지하는 항응고제를 넣은 혈액을 침강용 유리관에 넣어 가만히 세워 두었을 때 적혈구가 가라앉는 속도를 이르는 말이다. 1918년 스웨덴의 병리학자 파레우스의 창안에 의한 것이다. 측정방법으로 여러 가지가 있는데, 국제표준법으로는 1973년 웨스터그렌법의 1시간법이 선정되었으며, 1977년 그것을 개정하여 각국에서 쓰도록 권장하고 있다. 1시간 후 침강용 유리관 위쪽의 혈장기둥의 높이를 mm로 읽어, 그것을 적혈구침강의 1시간값으로 한다. 만약 혈장과 적혈구의 경계가 선명하지 못한 경우, 적혈구의 밀도가 그 이하에서는 일정하다고 여겨지는 곳의 눈금을 읽어 적혈구침강의 1시간값으로 한다. 측정 때의 실내온도는 18~25도로 한다. 일반적으로 이보다 온도가 높은 경우는 혈침반응이 촉진되며, 낮은 경우는 늦어진다. 정상 값은 2~10mm(남자), 3~15mm(여자)이며 15세 이하의 어린이, 50세 이상의 고령자에서는 약간 높다. |
