absorption spectrum
The detailed dependence on wavelength of the intensity of radiation absorbed by a given medium. Absorption spectra of gases are typically composed of discrete spectral lines and bands of overlapping lines that depend on the molecular or atomic composition of the absorbing substance and that may be used to identify it uniquely. ...

absorption coefficient
A measure of the extinction due to absorption of monochromatic radiation as it traverses a medium. Usually expressed as a volume absorption coefficient, k v , with units of reciprocal length (ie, area per unit volume), but also as a mass absorption coefficient, k m , with units of area per unit mass. The two are related by k v = k m , where is the density of the absorber. See also absorption optical thickness.

absorption
The traversal of nutrients from the small intestine through the cells lining the small intestine and subsequently into the blood vessels. It includes the process within the small intestine of breakdown of ingested food into fats, proteins (amino acids) and carbohydrates. Specific areas of the small intestine then absorb these nutrients through the cell walls.
