| stria vascularis ductus cochlearis | The stratified epithelium lining the upper part of the ligamentum spirale cochleae; it is penetrated by capillaries and is believed to be the site of production of endolymph. Synonym: stria vascularis ductus cochlearis, psalterial cord, vascular stripe. (05 Mar 2000) |

| stria vascularis of cochlea | The stratified epithelium lining the upper part of the ligamentum spirale cochleae; it is penetrated by capillaries and is believed to be the site of production of endolymph. Synonym: stria vascularis ductus cochlearis, psalterial cord, vascular stripe. (05 Mar 2000) |
| stria ventriculi tertii | A narrow, compact fibre bundle that extends along the line of attachment of the roof of the third ventricle to the thalamus on each side and terminates posteriorly in the habenular nucleus. It is composed of fibres originating in the septal area, the anterior perforated substance, the lateral preoptic nucleus, and the medial segment of the globus pallidus. Synonym: stria medullaris thalami, stria fornicis, stria ventriculi tertii. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Nitabuch's stria | A layer of fibrin between the boundary zone of compact endometrium and the cytotrophoblastic shell in the placenta. Synonym: Nitabuch's layer, Nitabuch's stria. (05 Mar 2000) |
| diagonalis stria | See: Broca's diagonal band. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tectal stria | A thin longitudinal band of nerve fibres accompanied by gray matter, near each outer edge of the upper surface of the corpus callosum under cover of the cingulate gyru. Synonym: stria longitudinalis lateralis, stria tecta, tectal stria. (05 Mar 2000) |
| terminal stria | A slender, compact fibre bundle that connects the amygdala (amygdaloid body) with the hypothalamus and other basal forebrain regions. Originating from the amygdala, the bundle passes first caudalward in the roof of the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle; it follows the medial side of the caudate nucleus forward in the floor of the ventricle's central part (or body) until it reaches the interventricular foramen, in the posterior wall of which it curves steeply down to enter the hypothalamus, with fibres passing both rostral and caudal to the anterior commissure. Coursing caudalward in the medial part of the hypothalamus, the bundle terminates in the anterior and ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei. Synonym: stria terminalis, Foville's fasciculus, Tarin's tenia, tenia saemicircularis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Langhans' stria | Fibrinoid that accumulates on the chorionic plate between the bases of placental villi during the first half of pregnancy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral longitudinal stria | A thin longitudinal band of nerve fibres accompanied by gray matter, near each outer edge of the upper surface of the corpus callosum under cover of the cingulate gyru. Synonym: stria longitudinalis lateralis, stria tecta, tectal stria. (05 Mar 2000) |
| abdominal | <anatomy> Pertaining to the abdomen. Origin: L. Abdominalis (18 Nov 1997) |
| abdominal abscess | <surgery> A localised pus-forming (suppurative) bacterial infection that occurs within the abdominal cavity as the result of a perforated viscus or post operative complication. Treatment requires either percutaneous or open surgical drainage. (27 Sep 1997) |
| abdominal adhesions | <surgery> Scarring that can occur within the abdomen in response to surgery or chronic inflammation. (27 Sep 1997) |
| abdominal angina | <surgery> A dull, crampy centralised abdominal pain that occurs 15-30 minutes after a meal. Associated with ischaemic bowel disease. Evaluated with mesenteric arteriography. (27 Sep 1997) |
| abdominal aorta | <anatomy> The largest arterial conduit below the diaphragm. This term refers to the portion of the aorta below the diaphragm to the bifurcation into the right and left common iliac arteries. It supplies blood to the abdominal viscera, pelvic organs and lower extremities. (20 Jun 2000) |
| abdominal aortic aneurysm | <surgery> A distended and weakened area in the wall of the abdominal aorta, more common in those who suffer from atherosclerosis. Symptoms include sudden, severe abdominal pain with radiation to the back. (27 Sep 1997) |
