WHO에서는 이 업무를 이어받아 세계 인류가 신체적-정신적으로 최고의 건강 수준에 도달하는 것을 목적으로 활동한다. 이를 위해 중앙검역소 업무와 연구자료 제공, 유행병 및 전염병 대책 후원, 회원국의 공중보건 관련 행정 강화와 확장 지원 등의 일을 맡아 본다. 헌장에서 건강은 육체적-정신적-사회적으로 완전히 행복한 상태를 말하며, 단순히 질병에 관한 것만을 지칭하는 것이 아니라고 정의한다. WHO는 국제보건사업의 지도적-조정적 기구의 성격을 띠며, 주요사업은 본부 사무국을 중심으로 한 중앙기술사업과 각 지역 사무국을 중심으로 한 각국에 대한 기술원조로 나누어진다. 2000년 현재 가맹국은 191개국이며 한국은 1949년 제2차 로마 총회에서, 북한은 1973년에 가입하였다. 본부는 스위스 제네바에 있다. |
